Kruger Camps Nov. '12 & JoBurg Hotel

We are psyched! My husband and I are planning a trip to South Africa (our first time in Africa) for this November (another couple may join us as well.) We realize that it is getting really late to book so we are trying to plan quickly.

Our questions are:

1. Is it advisable to stay all four nights at the same camp and do self drives (and night drives) from there each day? (A South African friend prefers this plan. - She advised that we stay at Skukuza all four nights.) Or, would it be better to move to a second camp for the final 2 nights? It seems like a hassle to move around, but we don’t want to miss out on different game and terrain.

2. If you advise moving to a second camp, which one would make a good partner to Skukuza? We were thinking of Satara, but it looks like a looooong drive. Also, is the travel time from Satarta back to JoBurg the same as from Skukuza (5 ½ hours)?

3. I realize this is mostly personal preference: But, most of the package tours we have seen offer only 3 nights/2days of safari. We were planning on 4 nights/3 days. Will this get dull?

4. What is a decent safe hotel at or near the airport in J-Burg?

5. Any other suggestions are welcome! Our current itinerary is below:

4 Days: Cape Town/Cape of Good Hope/Stellenbosch

4 Days: Drive Route 62 to Kynsna and Surf, Dive, Hike, etc.

Last day in Kynsna - Fly from George to J-Burg & spend the night at airport hotel

Kruger:

Day 1 - Rent a car in J-Burg and drive from J-Burg to Kruger and check in to our lodge.

Day 2 – Safari - Self-Drive Mornings, Organized Night Tours

Day 3 – Safari - Self-Drive Mornings, Organized Night Tours

Day 4 – Safari - Self-Drive Morning, Pack and party!

Day 5 - Drive back to J-Burg and fly out that evening to Tampa.

THANK YOU!!

Hi there....

You have two options:

1) Spend 2 nights in Satara and then 2 nights in Lower Sabie or Skukuza.

You can drive from Joburg to Satara via Orpen Gate.

Satara to Skukuza is 85kms and Satara to Lower Sabie is 85kms. If you drove slowly and accounted for game viewing, this takes about 3.5 hours.

2) If you think moving around is a hassle, then I would spend 4 nights in Lower Sabie. Skukuza is a big camp and very busy. I like its centrality and ability to explore so many different directions. So, if you end up spending 4 nights in Skukuza.....you will be totally fine and see plenty of game.

Book a night drive from either camp and also book a morning bush walk if you're into that.

You will love self-driving in Kruger. Make sure you get the Honeyguide Kruger map at the gate and also that everyone has binoculars.

Driving from Satara back to Joburg is longer than from Skukuza to Joburg. There is never a dull moment in Kruger and you will not be bored. Enjoy your time there do not hesitate to ask further questions, especially if you're having a hard time getting accommodations or want tips on which accommodations to book.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

We have had a very good experience with Aero Guest Lodge just a few minutes from J'burg airport a few months back and will probably use them again for future trips where we are arriving late or departing very early from O R Tambo airport. See link (w/pictures) if helpful.

Good value would be the new Metcourt hotel on the airport grounds, that is part of the Casino complex. It's one of the first 4 on this page: peermont.com/peermont/…MetcourtEmperors The other 3 of the first 4 are also part of the complex - moving up a little in price for each one. The casino operates free shuttles from the airport - every 20 minutes or less most of the day. Or if you rent your car on arrival, you can drive to the casino, park there for the night, hit the road the next day. I did that just 3 weeks ago myself.

If you donot like to do the long drive from Joburg to kruger ( at least 6 hours) you can take a domestic flight to Nelspruit or Hoedspruit and rent a car there!!

Have fun,
