6 days Kruger June 14, 2014

I've gleaned a lot from previous posts, especially from Lodge Trackers (thanks Jacqui) and the post on 24 October.

We have decided to do a self-drive and give ourselves 6 nights in and around the southern half of Kruger. We thought we would spend 2 at a private game lodge (mid range would be good, don't need luxury, just comfort and good wildlife viewing) and 4 at National Park Camps.

This will be 3rd week of June 2014 which I believe is just before school holidays

The camps that look most appealing for us from the NP website are

Roodewal Bush Lodge

Setara

Lower Sabie

Crocodile Bridge

I'd be grateful for any feedback/better ideas re these choices plus suggestions on a good private lodge in the not too expensive category

Sounds like a good plan. Roodewal is used by large families/groups - you need to book the whole lodge. For only four nights you would be better sticking to two camps. I would recommend Lower Sabie and Satara.

Hi there!

You are very welcome - Glad I could help!

Looks like you have a great itinerary - I second Tryhard, for 4 nights it would be best to stick to two camps. Satara and Lower Sabie are excellent for big cat sightings too.

Have you looked at other reserves, private ones and part of the greater Kruger area such as Timbavati and Balule. They are further north but not that far away. There are many good lodges in both. We have stayed at both. In Balule I recommend Naledi Bush Camp or their river camp Enkoveni, both mid range and we have found value for money hard to beat. Last year we stayed in Bush Camp, this September Enkoveni for 4 days. Timbavati is also great to visit, there are many choices there too. See TA reviews for Timbavati Reserve and this forum for suggestions there.

Thanks to you both - with concurring advice from 2 local experts I will go ahead and book for 2 nights each at Satara and Lower Sabie.

I'm still hoping for some recommendations from travellers re the two nights at a private game lodge in adjacent area.

Thanks for your post too Nooee - it wasn't on my screen when I did my previous response.

The advice re the mid-range private lodges is much appreciated and I will check out driving distances.

Any similar advice re Thornybush Reserve lodges would be great as location seems convenient

Glad to help. It is in my opinion good to experience 2 different reserves and thus have variety in terms of game and vegetation etc., 2 different areas does provide that. FYI, Thornybush is one of the smaller reserves at 13,500 hectares, Timbavati is 53,000 and Balule 35,000 hectares. I don't want to assume size has an impact on game viewing but it could, however, I am no expert. As we know with the game viewing it can be the luck of the day or night.

Hi again all,

Thornybush is a good reserve if you have limited time, as it is completely fenced in. So, this means it is not part of the actual Kruger. Usually, I recommend that coming all the way to SA without visiting the Kruger is a hit and miss, but because you are going to be self driving in the actual Kruger it may not be a big deal - you can experience both. Within Thornybush, Chapungu is a great option for something a little different!

Otherwise, my other faves in the mid-range category are nThambo Tree Camp, Gomo Gomo Game Lodge and Elephant Plains. Africa on Foot too!

Warmest regards
