Kruger Self Drive Safari - Questions

Planning a 5 day self safari in Kruger with my tween son. I am so excited and looking forward to it.

Biyamiti - Satara - Tamboti - Letaba - Shimuwini - Satara

Several Questions.

1. Reaching Jo'burg in the PM and driving to Kruger early morning. Best options for grocery shopping ? Is it safe in Joburg to self drive/dine out/grocery shop ? Other than woolworths what other options ?

2. Kruger self drive directions/map - are they available at all the gates. Is it available online for planning purposes ?

3. Fauna identification charts - are they available at all the gates ?

4. Do gas stations take credit card - If not how much cash should I carry ?

5. Are fruits/vegetables allowed into Kruger ?

6. Renting a Car, do I take full insurance from the rental agency ?

Any other tips

So happy you had a great time! We've been back for a month and are still feeling the glow of Africa. We had a leopard in our camp at Berg-en-Dal, making night campfires a no-no. We loved the M&B at Lower Sabie and stayed in the guesthouse right next to it. We also loved our May travel because of no bugs. Can't wait for your trip report.

Hi Rob

Wonderful to hear you had ''the most amazing time of my life''. It makes me so happy to hear this after all your trip planning.

Cannot wait to read your report.

Love your stories, yes the gate would not have been open all night, but you should always carry a torch anyway haha. And I think we have all got elephant stories from the Mopani area, wonderful!

Once again I will say that the most amazing time can be had without spending thousands per night at a private lodge.

Thanks for coming back to us with this great news

Thanks sandman.

This forum has been a great source of information.

Do wait to hear my Eland story and clipspringer story.. We set our goals of Big 5 and 10 antelopes. Though Big 5 was almost met, It was a solid 10 for the antelopes.

That's amazing, seeing Eland, Steenbok and Duiker all on your first visit is fantastic. I think I can guess which of the five you did not see, but I will wait for instalment two.

And those cute Klippies, gorgeous!
