Visiting with a 2.5 yo, sample itinerary, advice

My wife and I plan to visit Kruger in November this year, we'll have our 2.5 yo son with us. We'll rent a car and drive from Joburg, then stay in a couple of rest camps and head back. Our son is OK sitting in a car for about 4 hrs (especially if he takes a nap), but after that gets restless and needs a break. Here's what we planned so far:

Day 1: Drive from Joburg to Lower Sabie (through Croc Bridge gate), full day with stop for lunch (any particular place you would recommend?)

Day 2: Lower Sabie

Day 3: Drive to Satara, full day, watch animals along the way, stop in picnic areas along the way

Days 4-5, Satara

Day 6: Drive back to Joburg, leaving through Orpen gate, full day with stop for lunch (again, anything particular we should check out?)

Any advice or suggestions? Thanks!

Your first day of driving is going to be long, much longer than four hours, so you might want to consider breaking the journey, or if your son is ok with just pit stops for the drive then you can do the drive in one shot. Same goes for your last day.

For the days in Kruger it is best to do a very early drive when the gates open for 3 hours and then back to the camp when the day is at its hottest and then do an late afternoon drive for 2 hours until the gate closes.

When driving in Kruger most people don't strap their kids in car seats but that is a very personal choice and I'm not making any recommendation merely stating a fact (not even sure what the road rules are with regards to this). This just means that the kids can play on the back seat and tends to get less restless. Then from lower Sabie to Satara there is two stops that can by made: Skukuza and then Thokwane picnic site.

Thanks. Can you estimate total driving time? I hear people say it's about 5 hours to Croc Gate, and it looks like it will be another 1-1.5 hrs from the gate to the Lower Sabie. Does that look accurate?

We are considering making a longish lunch break in the middle, but are not sure where. if there are things to see along the way, we actually could extend our trip and stay somewhere for the night.
