Weather in October

I have booked at a lovely lodge in the Hoedspruit area . The tent is lovely and the price right, but the room only has a fan and I am having second thoughts. The lack of air conditioning could be a problem because my husband has a light asthma. How is the weather, especially during the nights at the beginning of October? If needed, is there air conditioning in the 4x4 during the day drives?

Air conditioning in a tent?

I doubt it can be done, unless one has a "portable" Air conditioner.

Anyway, Hoedspruit daytime temperatures average about 28°C with an average night time temperature of around 16°.... as can be seen on the following link:

As you can see, not too different from New York in June, except possibly less likelihood of rain.

BTW, I am also asthmatic, and although everyone is different, I have found that I 'wheeze' far less when in the bush.... probably because the air is cleaner than in the city.

Are you hiring a 4 X 4 for self drive? if yes, then the vehicle will very likely have air conditioning.

If you will be doing game drives organised by the lodge, then the vehicles will surely be "fully air conditioned"..... i.e. completely open safari vehicles :-)

Whatever you do, ENJOY my AMAZING country!

Hi there,

Here in Hoedspruit, the temperatures can easily reach the 30's during the day, and humidity starts to build too, as it the beginning of our rainy/wet season. Nights are cooler, at around 20.

Unfortunately, there is no air conditioning on the 4x4 game drives, as they are open topped, meaning they have no roof - only sides that come up to your elbow when sitting. Unless they have specifically specified otherwise??

Warmest regards

I agree with all Jacqui & Gavin suggested. Hoedspruit is a little warmer than points further south in the greater Kruger. Expect 80s and 90s and though wont be as rainy early in October when you come as it will be December & January, there's still a chance of rain and humidity in October. But it should not be too bad. I really like that time of year. I'm American but grew up here in the bush with asthma in our family too. As Gavin said the air is quite clean which helps, the dust causes some problems for those with asthma but that's when those October sprinkles Jacqui mentioned will help. Also allergies kick up in Spring which is when you will be here. We carry albuterol and Claritan that time of year!!!

If air conditioning will help your husband, there are some very reasonably priced safari lodges just outside Hoedspruit that do have air conditioning in their chalets (not tents). There are a couple that are brand new too.

Wish you the very best here. I know you will be thrilled by the memories you will carry with you for a lifetime.

Thank you! What accommodations would you suggest? I made reservations already and love the place I have booked, but communication has been poor so far, very late with emails, my last one went out a week ago to reserve airport pick up and still no reply, not sure what to do. I would like to check out alternatives in case I decide to cancel.

We have had temperatures in October over the last 30 years of going to Kruger sometimes that are in excess of 38 degrees in the Park. Hoedspruit is no exception . It can however, if there are early spring rains, drop the temperature radically. Last year we went from two fleeces and a jacket to lolling in the pool within 5 days. We had temperatures of around 40 degrees for much of our two weeks in the Park. Interestingly enough our January trip has often produced far lower temperatures. Its up to the individual person's ability to cope with a vast difference and always be prepared to have one or two warm things at the bottom of your suitcase! Wherever you go enjoy!

Taking a week to answer emails not a good sign. Its possible their system went down but it shouldn't take a week to fix. hmmmmm.
