Souvenirs

Currently in Malelane. We travel back to Johannesburg airport on Saturday.

My wife wants to pick up some tradiational African souvenirs, carvings and the like.

With little time left, we could do with a steer of where is best to look, either locally or en route to JNB?

Have a look at Cambanos & son, in Midrand, about 1/2 hour from the O R Tambo International.

Yep, looks good but we might be on a tight schedule to be able to get to Midrand.

We just returned from a trip to Johannesburg and Kruger. There is a really great African craft market in Rosebank (Johannesburg) that has all of the traditional carvings, etc. We spent a couple hours there and got most of the souvenirs we needed for gifts for family, etc. It's immediately next to a shopping area called "The Zone" at Rosebank. Cash only, and bartering is the standard method of determining price. If you run out of time there is a really nice gift store at OR Tambo in the terminal for departing flights called "Out of Africa" and they have lots of things too (traditional type things, along with T shirts, etc.). Prices weren't bad either, which surprised us at an airport giftshop.

Hello

You have probably left Kruger by now but I presume you checked out the bigger camp stores there? We always have managed to get a few nice bits and pieces, such as hand painted ceramics and locally made jewellery.

As Lisa has said there are plenty of options at the airport, we never get through the International terminal empty handed. The store she mentioned is probably the biggest, it is massive and on the left side of the walkway. You won't miss it. There are a few other stores there also. One on the other side has from memory a few more unique items, think its on a corner. There is also a Carrol Boyes store if you like nice home wares, particularly pewter. And still probably more but these are the ones I hang out at..

Just allow plenty of time, it takes ages to look over all the items for sale!
