Shindzela Tented Safari camp vs Umkumbe Safari Lodge

We are trying to pick a private reserve for our 2015 trip and have narrowed it down to Shindzela Tented Safari camp in Timbavati or Umkumbe Safari Lodge in Sabi Sand. The accommodation style doesn't worry us i.e Shindzela runs on solar lights and gas. Our priority is to get the most out of the game drives & bush walks.

Shindzela is on 3500 hectares and the camp overlooks a small waterhole, while Umkumbe is on 6500 hectares and overlooks the Sand River. During the time off between game drives it would be nice to sit back and watch animals go by.

Any thoughts welcome.

I don't know about Shindzela, however, I would definitely recommend Umkumbe. There is always some animal activity at the river to fill in the day - ellies, buck, buffalo, baboons, giraffe. I enjoyed my stay there so much I am going back to Umkumbe next year.

I have been to a lodge in the Timbervati Reserve and in my experience of the two reserves, there seems to more game in Sabi Sands. What ever your choice, you will love it.

Hi there,

Both of these lodges area great, with different offerings - tented vs. chalet too. Can totally understand how confusing it can be sometimes to plan a safari!

However, just to make a correction - Umkumbe is actually only situated with 650 hectares of traversing, not 6500 :(.

So, purely based on this, I would recommend Shindzela, as the larger your traversing area, the higher your chances are of seeing a wide variety of game.

Have you looked at Africa on Foot, or Gomo Gomo Game Lodge? These are around the same price and both offer great value for money experiences. Gomo Gomo has a huge waterhole right outside of the lodge, and a traversing area of 6000+ hectares.

Shindzela for sure, IMO.

Umkumbe has a very small traversing area, and you may end up sharing it with day visitors (I don't know if the external "night safaris" still run, but I think so).

Shindzela is stunningly located and I think offers a great bush experience.

As mentioned by Lodge Trackers, Gomo Gomo, Nthambo and Africa on Foot offer excellent experiences, as do Umlani and Kambaku.
