Garden Route and Safari

Hi,

Many thanks for your advice. I uderstand what you are saying about the one nights but sometimes they seem a bit unavoidable if you want to see many things. Is it really advisable to spend all the time in one of the centres for example 5 nights in Franshoek - surely this would be lots of drivivng backwards and forwards between Cape Town and Franshoek. We also wated to do the Peninsula and Hermanus. Is there any advise on doing these 3 things (cape town, Franshoek, Hermanus) without moving centres?

Also we want to drive from Franshoek to Knysna (along the N62) in one day - is this doable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi joolz

I think its important to bear in mind that distances in South Africa are large: most towns are far apart and it sounds like you will end up spending a lot of time on the road - this is not nec a bad thing as the scenery is fantastic! Spending 5 nights in Franschhoek sounds hell of a long - unless you will do the surrounding towns like Stellenbosch and Somerset West and Paarl, and of course if you have a thing for wine farms and great food. It seems crazy to commute btw FR and CT. Um, Fransch. to Knysna....hmmm. A long drive. Why not go Franschoek Barrydale Knysna? and spend a night in Barrydale? Anything is doable - it just depends how long you want to be driving for in one stretch!!

Welcome to the Western Cape though - we look forward to having you!

Regards,

Suzy

I would think 2 days in Franschoek at the most, keep at least 3 for Cape Town and 1 for hermanus. Not sure about staying in 1 centre - personally I think its better to pick 2 places - Fr and CT and then you don't need to worry about travelling between the two at night and you could enjoy afternoon sundowners at Camps Bay, dinners or whatever without feeling like you've still got to drive out of town.

Hi

We did the drive from Stellenbosch to Mossel Bay using R62 and it took nearly 5 hours via Oudtshoorn - then took the N2 to Knysna - Roadworks on both R62 & N2 can add 15minutes just parked - on 1st Feb.

So allow for 7 hours Franshoek to Knysna - speed cameras do exist too - but it's a good drive - as long as you've got air con - mind the tortoises on R62 though.
