itinerary review

We are planning our first trip to S.A. for Feb 2008.

So far we have the following itinerary planned and would welcome any advise of things we must do/see. The trip will be for about 16 days.

Fly London to Joburg.

Spend 3-4 nights in Pretoria with friends. Whilst here we plan to visit Blyde River Canyon, Pilgrims Rest etc.

Fly to Port Elizabeth and hire car to drive along the Garden Route, stopping at where?

Would also like to spend a couple of days relaxing on a beach - suggestions please.

The final 5-7 days will be spent in Cape Town doing as much as possible before either flying home or bak to Joburg and then home.

What things should we include as must sees, accomodation along the Garden Route and good restuarants (meat for hubby, fish for me). We are not that bothered about doing a safari as we done this last year in Kenya.

Any advise would be welcome.

Plettenberg Bay would make a good stopping place along the garden route. The Plettenberg Hotel has lovely views and good food.

Close by is Knysna another attractive spot although no beach as such.

Wilderness is a small town with lovely beaches and Xanadu GH is right on the beach (www.xanadu-wilderness.co.za)

Closer to Cape Town are attractive places like Hermanus or Swellendam where you can also find good accommodation.

My favorite "unmissable" place on the Garden Route is the Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Although there is only a tiny beach the views are stunning, and the accommodation is right on the ocean.

You can see some pictures of the Garden route and Cape Town here

Please, please check out THE FERNERY. It is situated in the forest. You have to stay more that one night so that you can do the forest picnic and the tractor ride through the forest. It's like travelling through an enchanted forest.
