I often spend 3 weeks at a time in Cape Town but it depends how far and wide you want to travel as to the viability of the suggestions. There is plenty of varied landscape within 2 hours of Cape Town including the West Coast / Safari parks / Oudtshoorn / Montagu Hot springs etc etc. I have put a few ideas on the website below...

But this is limited to things closer to Cape Town. Perhaps come back with more specific questions. There are a lot of nature reserves and hiking areas across the Cape Province. You should try and pick up a copy of the Time Out Guide to Cape Town 2008 magazine as soon as you arrive. It is very good and better than some guide books.

Many thanks for your reply and attached website. As this is our fifth trip to Western Cape - we are feeling a little more adventureous and have done all the things listed. Do you have any idea what the Drakenburgs are like and is there any good sights on route. Was thinking about venturing into Jo'burg - as I was born there, and would love to see 'old haunts' but have heard so many bad reports and feel without meeting family it would be unwise.

Have you thought about KwaZuluNatal? I would suggest flying to Durban and hiring a car. The KZN South Coast, (Shelly Beach, Uvongo, Margate, Ramsgate) is a wonderful family holiday destination, with endless beaches, the warm Indian Ocean and good fishing, don't miss Oribi Gorge for beautiful walks and hikes with spectacular views.

In Durban there is ushaka marine world which the boys would really enjoy for a full day. Then head up the North coast for the Hluhluwe Game reserve for a great game safari and Lake St Lucia for more fishing and river cruises with the hippos.

The Drakensberg is also great, nice family hotels with trout fishing, horse riding and guided walks in the mountains.

Just another suggestion to add, if you are thinking of going to Joberg, then why not hire a car and drive to Sun City. Your children will love it and the Pilanesberg National Park is awesome...and seeing you have a car you can then do a self-drive safari around the National Park.

We have done this twice, once with my children and they loved it......you can have such an amazing family holiday in Sun City.
