Visiting a Township in Cape Town??

Hello,

I would be interested to know if there are any organised tours of townships in cape town. I'm sure there are and would be advertised when you get to a hotel but I would like to organise something before going. There are ones in Rio, Brazil and Cambodia which take you there for a day and you bring gifts/ food and such. I do not want a big organised thing with 200 tourists and cameras, but if a private guide / interpreter could be hired to show us and tell us some facts etc, and tell us what to bring. I presume it's not advisable to go alone.

Thank you

Tracy

First - definately not advisable to go into townships alone.

If you search under 'township tours in Cape Town' you will get a number of results and recommendations.

This one is near Hout Bay and run by a guy named Afrika Moni:

I went from the hop on/hop off bus, and was the only person on the tour. So yes, the groups tend to be small.

It was a great experience, as I was able to sit down with Afrika in his living room and just chat and meet his family. I also loaned a bunch of kids my camera once I got outside, and that was great fun. It can be hard to interact with local people when you're traveling, but this gives you the opportunity. I learned a lot.

You may have heard of the Niall Mellon trust, the Irish charity that sends a couple of planeloads of people every year as a "hit squad" to build houses in the township near Hout Bay. The money raised then employs local builders to carry on the work and build houses all year round. They can arrange a township tour (contact them through the website) http://www.irishtownship.com/htm/about.htm

and are extremely keen to see Irish people visit to see what can be done.

Yes...3nations, the township I mentioned was helped by that trust, and the guide who leads the tours lives in one of the Irish-built houses. I should have given the name of the township: it's Imizamo Yethu.

I have been to the township you mentioned near Hout Bay . It was a great experience . Africa is really nice he made us very welcome . We were amazed by the children who are very friendly they reached for our hands as we walked through the township and posed for some photos .

We got the hop on , hop off bus . Africa met us as we got off the bus and stayed with us intrducing us to his people .

The township in hout bay is very small and therefore limiting in what there is to see.

I would reccomend that you do take a tour with a guide on a vehicle, privately. That way you can cover more ground otherwise it becomes repeatitive. This way you can get off the "poverty" trail and on to the "cultural" trail ie. see more of the Cape Town Culture etc.

There are very very few companies that offer a full day in the townships. It has become a commercialised product....unfortunately.

Hi Tracy

Some suggestions for quality providers of cultural tours into townships:

Nthuseng Tours www.nthusengtours.co.za

Coffee Beans Routes www.coffeebeans.co.za

Andulela www.andulela.com

Another great option is to tour through Masiphumelele on bicycle through BEN - Book via Without Limits - www.withoutlimits.co.za

Hi Kurt,

I just read your blog. I think that it is largely accurate. I think that the statement about "black guides" being trapped in the townships is incorrect.

I am not in favour of Township Tours and would much rather be promoting Cultural Tours.I think that it is a more informative, full day, experience.
