Weather in Cape Town July/August

I am considering visiting Cape Town, driving Garden Route and safari in Eastern Cape area. Can anybody advise me about weather conditions in July and August? It is the best time for me to visit but am a bit worried about the weather.

This is our winter season here in South Africa and in the Western Cape, Winter is also the wet season. The Eastern part of the counrtry has summer rain. Here are some links to climate stastics for the areas you are thinking of visiting:

Cape Town: weathersa.co.za/Climat/…CapeTownStats.jsp

Garden Route: weathersa.co.za/Climat/…GeorgeStats.jsp

Eastern Cape: weathersa.co.za/Climat/Climstats/PortElizabe…

Weather wise it is not the best time to visit but it does have some advantages. Hotel and game lodge rates are much lower at this time. If you come in August, you will have a good chance of seeing whales and maybe spectacular wildflower displays in the region North of Cape Town. Game viewing is generally better during the winter months. If you do want to come during our winter then try September. The rates are still low at most places, the chances of seeing whales and flowers are higher and the weather is improving (but still not great).

The one thing about the areas you are thinking of visiting is that most of the fun things to do are outdoors so if you do have bad weather it can be very unpleasant. We can have very nice days during our winter months here but we can also have constant rain for two weeks on end. It is definately a gamble to travel at this time. March is a good time for the weather but rates are higher and you will not see whales and flowers.

I hope this helps.

We were in Cape Town for 6 nights in July. We had one rainy day (showers rather than constant) but travelled to Cape Point on that day, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The rest of the time was lovely, Table Mountain was clear, but we were really lucky.

The hotel staff did say that they hadn't been able to see the top of Table Mountain for the previous two weeks - so we did count our blessings.

Then again, you come from Scotland - what's bit of rain!!

watching the sun set right now over Camps Bay after climbing Table Mountain today. We've been here two weeks and have had the best weather - not too hot high 75 and clear and brisk in the evenings requiring a sweater. Locals keep saying cold it is, but we laugh since we will go home soon to 90 degree weather. One day of rain in two weeks - totally awesome.
