Cape Town arrival

Hi. we arrive in Cape Town this coming Thursday for a 5 night stay before going off to tour the winelands/garden route, then back for 3 more days in C.T. We have had some great advice on this forum, helping us to plan the whole trip for the best routes and itinery etc.

Just one more question before we leave, we arrive in C.T. at around 6.0pm, I am thinking by the time we pick up the car, drive into the centre to pick up the keys for the apartment ( Metropolis ) it will probably be about 8.0 ish. Does anyone know if at that time there would be any shops or supermarket type stores open in the area we're staying, just thinking about basic stuff like bread, coffee, milk. Also are there any bars or pubs close by, think we might just like a beer or two after the long journey.

Many thanks.

Martyn & Linda.

A lot of the petrol stations have shops which are open 24/7 so you can get the basics. Their prices are usually quite a bit higher than in the general supermarkets but just to get what you need for the first night should be fine. If you mean you are staying at the Metropolis Apartments at De Waterkant, then you are very close to the V&A Waterfront where there is an endless selection of places to get a meal and a drink. Have a wonderful time

Hi,

Many supermarkets close at 9 p.m. (weekdays) and some petrol stations are open 24 hours.

You should not have a problem in finding a restaurant where you can have a beer and a light meal after 8 p.m. in De Waterkant. Basics like bread, coffee, milk etc. can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. the following day.

Am sure the rental agents would be happy to stock up with basics should you request this.

Hi M & L

From the Metropolis you will have no problem. Just around the corner on Somerset Road there is a Pick n'Pay Express which is a mid range supermarket selling fresh produce as well as the normal petrol-station type food. This is open 24 hours. Then straight across the road in the new Cape Quarter Shopping centre there is a Spar supermarket open until 9pm. This has been described by a few people on here as the poshest supermarket in Cape Town! You should definitely be there before 8pm so no problems.

The new Cape Quarter 2 also has about 9 or 10 restaurants open until late so you don't need to go to the Waterfront.

If you are desperate for a beer you dont even need to go as far as Cape Quarter. Just round the corner from Metropolis is The Firemans Arms - a long established, non franchised rather 'British' pub which is strong on sport. Its a friendly place, popular with regulars and they do generous portions of 'pub grub' - a real local!

Well, think that's all our problems solved, Fireman's Arms is just the kind of place that we like, good atmosphere, beer and pub grub, and we don't even have to walk that far. Brilliant. Thanks guys.

Hi matbe,

There is a BP Garage just as you depart the airport that sells the basics.

There is a brand new "Woolworths" food store at departures lounge now at C.T. International. If there is one at arrivals, buy food, and basics there (its like M & S.) Alternatively up early next morning and do your shopping at the new Spar at Cape Quarter 2. Very nice and you can get all your basics there. Dont need to mission to get to park at the waterfront. Park at Cape Quarter and do everything inside. You can even go to "LAZARI" for your breakfast for the first monring and thyen buy your goodies there - kill 3 birds with one stone in the morning.
