Cape Town - public transport

We will be stuck in a conference hotel for 10 days without a pool, no where to sit outside or a car. We like being outdoors and wonder what is the cheapest way to get around Cape Town and to local beaches?

CT is a wonderful city but public transport is not its strong point

Taxis and the HOHO bus are probably the best way around town without your own car

There is a nice and comparatively safe (in the day time and travel first class - not expensive) train journey to Simonstown and back

For further afield like Cape Point or the Winelands think private day tours = expensive

Are taxis expensive? Is the HOHO bus free?

Compared to the UK taxis are cheap but then petrol is less than half the price - are you sure you can't hire a car for a few days as they drive on the left and outside of rush hour the driving is quite easy

The HOHO bus is actually quite expensive see

Hop On – Hop Off expensive? It is R120.00 per adult and valid for the whole day!

If you do not want to hire a car you can purchase a two day pass and take the Red Route City Tour on one day and the Blue Route on the second day which will allow you to visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the Constantia Wine Valley. All this for just R200.00 and you even get a night tour throw in for free (worth R80.00).

Although plenty of sunblock required as today there were a lot of red faces sat in the red bus!

10 days without a car is a bit much but then it depends which hotel youre at and what time of the year . If you are near the waterfront there are busses to Bantry Bay and as Belfast said the HO HO bus which is cheap and worthwhile.
