I just googled your question and the answer is NO, US citizens do not need a visa to visit South Africa. You do need to bring your passport!

The answer is YES, you do need a visa but that will be issued at e.g. CT/JHB airport when immigrating. No need to get one upfront.

Just to avoid confusion, what you get on entry to SA - if you are a US citizen, or UK, much other EU, Aus, NZ, Canadian and many others - is NOT a Visa. It is a Temporary Visitors Permit valid for up to 3 months. You are exempt from getting a South African Visa. Probably covers 70 or 80 percent of tourists coming to SA.

If you are not a citizen of one of the listed countries - in special cases, even if you are a passport holder - then you DO need a Visitors Visa. Which has to be obtained before coming to SA and is not free of charge!

Lovely thread! Let's split hair! LOL

Whatever it is called that one needs under the visa section of home affairs, officially known as visitors permit, it will be issued on entry.

But you wouldn't have needed to ask the question with a simple research of a US Government website.

And the information posted on a government website would be much more reliable than the word of strangers on a forum.

Hi Bind,

As mentioned by others, it is not a visa but a temporary visitor's permit which is issued upon arrival.

You do need a return ticket, two blank passport pages and a passport that is valid for the length of your stay.
