How to spend 8 days in Western Cape?

We arrive in Cape Town in Oct 13, 2011 for 8 days. Aside from the usual CT highlights, what's the best use of our time? We are interested in wine-tasting, hiking, and generally seeing the extended area - Garden Route, whales, etc. Will have a car and am thinking 3 nights in CT and some combo of nights on the road. All advice most welcome, including accommodation suggestions. We would like to keep nightly costs around $150 US$ on average but can go higher if necessary.

Thanks for all advice!

With the Garden Route it will depends if your outgoing flight is from Cape Town or Johannesburg. If it is from Cape Town, you will have to drive back to Cape Town and spend a last night here.

Day 1-3: Hiking you can do from the front of Table Mountain, up Klipper Gorge, or you can climb from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens side. Whales you can do on a day-trip from Cape Town. Peninsula and penguins you can also do on a day-trip. For accommodation in Cape Town: www.campsbayresort.com , www.villacostarose.co.za , www.villageandlife.com , www.africaneliteproperties.co.za .

Day 4-7: Driving from Cape Town, you take the N2 highway towards Knysna and spend your time there. Knysna heads, big tree, boat trips on the lagoon, and lots more. Plettenberg Bay is just 30mins away. Return to Cape Town from Knysna via Oudtshoorn and have a overnight in Franschoek, www.lacabriere.co.za , is a good palce to stay.

Day 8: Return to Cape Town Airport if your flight is from here or if not, then add the overnight in after you leave Cape Town and finish your journey off in Port Elizabeth. Have fun planning your trip and enjoy.

If you have return flights to and from Cape Town, then 8 days isn't very long to do Cape Town (including its surrounds) and the garden toute. It is doable, as Hank suggests. However, you would be much better spending more time in Cape Town, and places a couple of hours away

if this is your first visit to Cape Town, then you should try and spen 4 days here. There is lots to keep you occupied - Table Mountain, Cape Point, the waterfront, Constantia with its wineries, Kirstenbosch gardens, the beautiful beachfront areas of Clifton, Camps Bay etc, Robben Island......and I could go on.

That would leave you with 2 days in the winelands - Stellenbosch is my favourite but others prefer Franschhoek. There is more than just wine estates to these areas. Both have stunning scenery, world class restaurants for lunch or dinner and Stellenbosch itself is a lovely town to walk around, with its excellent examples of Cape Dutch architecture

Finally I would recommend the Overberg Coast. You should see lots of whales in October. I usually recommend de Kelders over Hermanus for its better sighting of the whales from the cliffs. In fact you could start off here to try and maximise your whale spotting! There is also shark diving here, if you are into that kind of thing.

So, lots to see and do within a 2 hour drive of Cape Town

We are doing the route 62 which is the longest wine route in the world! Our accomodation ranges from self catering farm cottages to 4 star B&B's but a very interesting place which has rave reviews on tripadvisor is http://www.zwartbergview.co.za/

and another one very near Oudtshodrn http://www.dezeekoe.co.za/ you will get to see meerkats and we are also staying for one night as a very special treat at this historical place in Swellendam http://www.klipperivier.com/

we have stayed here before on two other visits and what a spectacular place.
