Is a car necessary?

We will be renting a car to drive the Garden Route, and then will be in Cape Town for 4-5 days. Should we go ahead and keep the car, or return it to save a few extra bucks?

If we keep the car, will we be spending a fortune on parking at our hotel or at sites around town?

Keeping it is normally a lot cheaper - and a lot more convenient than handing it back. What with the cost of tours, taxis, airport transfers and sightseeing buses it will quickly add up to more than the cost of a few days car hire.

Parking in and around Cape Town, compared to US or European cities is a fraction of the price - see this from yesterday :

tripadvisor.com/…36854963

All Guesthouses and B&Bs will have free parking - or safe parking nearby. Some of the International Hotels might charge you. Even many of these don't.

Otherwise driving around Cape Town is easy, roads are good and traffic is much lighter than in Europe or the US.

No a car is not "necessary". But having one is so much better than not!

Yes agree with VandeCaab. We found it so convenient to have a car to come and go as you please.

And by the time you get to Cape Town, driving on the wrong side of the road will be comfortable for you. What part of the city are you staying in?
