August Hotel and Itinerary

It's our first time in cape town and we are travelling in the month of August for 8 days. I understand that it's winter during that month. Please suggest a 3-4 star hotel near the tourist attraction and shopping area. Also please recommend an 8 days itinerary for a first timer.

Hotels will depend on your budget as these vary greatly. A good 3* I use often is Hotel Graeme in Greenpoint. It's very central and if you just want a room that's clean and comfortable then it's great. If you want something fancier with sea or mountain views then look at guesthouses or apartments in Seapoint Tamboerskloof or Camps Bay.

Winter can be very windy and wet if a storm happens to pass through - they can last several days. Or you can have clear sunny skies. Be prepared for both. Have a good warm waterproof jacket with a hood (umbrellas are useless in Cape Town's wind) and good waterproof shoes or boots and you will be fine.

Itinerary - Best is to stop in at the Cape Town Tourism office at the V&A Waterfront when you arrive. There you can collect maps and brochures of things that interest you. It's very easy to explore on your own. My recommendations: Spend some time in the city CBD - lots of great museums and galleries. The artscape is the city theatre that has shows throughout the year. Take a scenic drive around the peninsula, visit Chapman's Peak and Cape Point. If you like penguins stop in at Boulders Beach in Simons Town. Simons Town also has some quaint shops & restaurants and interesting museums. If you enjoy wine there are many excellent wine estates in Constantia and further out in Stellenbosch, Botrivier, Franschoek, Paarl & Wellington. If the weather allows take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain or the trip out to Robben Island.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Cherelle and Hank for your recommendations, I really appreciate it.

Is it recommended to stay for a day in one of the wine estate like Stellenbosch or Franschoek?

And Hank, you recommended a day trip safari from Cape Town, do you have any recommendation which safari to visit?

Thanks again for all your help.

The Game Reserve recommended close to Cape Town would be Inverdoorn Game Reserve. They have a variety of accommodations options available to you as well. It really depends on you whether to stay for a day in 1 of these towns. I would suggest to stay maybe then in Franschoek.
