Buitenverwachting lunch

Hi,

Considering eating lunch at BVW while visiting Constantia. I cannot which restaurant to go to--there are 2 listed on their site. Is it the Courtyard that is only open for lunch? We will be there in May--will it be too chilly then to eat outside?

Thank you.

Andrea

Andrea,

Also have a look at Bistro 1682 at Steenberg (lunch only). It might well be too chilly to sit outside at Buitenverwachting where there is the formal restaurant and the Courtyard and the average cost of a meal is R350 (for further information refer to Rossouw's Restaurant Guide (www.rossouwsrestaurants.com).

I omitted to mention that the Courtyard (outside) also has a lighter menu and is open only for lunch but in May it might well be too cold to sit there.

Hi Andreama

In May the weather could be anything but if you get lucky you may get a lovely still warmish day in which case the Courtyard at BW is delightful. There are tables under a covered veranda terrace which are the ones to go for unless you like sitting in direct sunshine - the other tables do have parasols but if it is even slightly windy they may not be put up. The good news is that inside eating is not a dreadful alternative. If the weather looks not so good then ring in advance and ask for a window table which will have a lovely vista over the vineyards and the back of Table Mountain/12 Apostles in the background. In May assuming midweek then the restaurant is unkikely to be that busy but for a particular table book a day or so in advance.

TG is right - there are a lot of good alternatives for lunch in Constantia and Steenberg is certainly one of them - I like Catherina's - it is a little more fine dining than the bistro but not at all snooty.

Thank you for your replies. 1682 looks really beautiful. I may have to eat their instead of at Steenberg.

Hi Andrea,

The food at Bistro 1682 at Steenberg is excellent and the location beautiful.

Food and wines excellent and not pricey. Try the Steenberg Sauvignon

Blanc Rattlesnake.

Catherina's and Buitenverwachting are more upmarket and pricey - probably

a good choice for evening fine dining.

The Courtyard is for luncheons but the view and ambience is better at Bistro 1682.

While the food at 1682 is fine and the place popular and busy, IMO the food and ambience at Catherina's is far superior - but yes it is more expensive. Just depends what you are looking for.

Despite the change of chef, don't overlook the possibility of having lunch at La Colombe - it still produces excellent fare in a relaxed setting. (give the River cafe a miss).

Your choice may also depend upon your time constraints; Buitenverwacting will be the closest to your wine tasting venues and Kirstenbosch, then La Colombe and finally Steenberg, the farest away. You will want to spend plenty of time over lunch at any of these venues and B is probably the most leisurely of them all!

We serve more informal Bistro style lunches in the courtyard. If the weather plays up, one can move into the restaurant and choose between the fine dining menu or the bistro menu.
