Day Trip Suggestions from Hermanus?

We'll be staying in Hermanus October 10-13. Besides whale watching, are there any suggested day trips? We'll have a car. Thanks!

You can always take a drive for the day out to Cape Agulhas. Enjoy the most southern tip of the African continent with as well where the 2 oceans meet.

The drive from Hermanus to Cape Agulhas will take you about 2hrs max. Along the way you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee with their famous cheese cake in a town called Napier, which will be basicly a half way stop for you on the way to Cape Agulhas.

Details: From Hermanus will head on the R43 until you get to a town called Stanford, whee you will turn left onto the R326. Continue with the drive until you get to a almost 4way crossing, where you will need to make a right turn onto the R316 where you will continue and drive through towns such as Napier, Bredasdorp and also Struisbaai heading down to Cape Agulhas. There is a light house and also a sign which indicates the most southern tip of the African Continent with the line of where the oceans split. Now, you can head back the same way or you can head back a different way, but the only thing is that the other way is a gravel/dirt road. So i am not sure if you want to take the chance on driving on them and they seem to be pretty well taken car off. I did the drive about a month ago and the road was still in good shape.

1/

take the scenic drive (11/2 hours) to the wine and food village of Franschoek . Take R44 out of Hermanus to N2 continue up N2 towards Somerset West but turn off at Grabouw to R321 to Threewaterskloof dam. Then R45 over the Franschoek pass. Stop off at the viewpoint to see the beautiful Franschoek Vally laid out infront of you. Either have lunch in the village main road or up in one of the vineyards with fabulous views. Many of the vineyards had formal dining at lunchtime but we had a nice lunch at Dieu Donne, (just walked in without a booking) , the views are beautiful.

2/

Take the coastal road , R44, to Stoney Point (Bettys Bay) to visit the penguin colony, the Howard Porter Botanical Gardens, pretty village of Kleimond and return via St Lowreys pass (N2) having lunch at Waterkloof or Vergelegen winery and back to Hermanus , R43.

3/ a much shorter trip is to De Kelders (good for whales) 20 mins, onto the tiny, cute village of Stanford where Marianas has good reviews for a meal. Within a few miles of Stanford on R326 there is Birkenhead brewery with nice restaurant and tour of the brewery and Klein River cheese makers which offers picnics by the river.

Obviously check on Internet for opening times etc. as we visited in the high season and places may be closed a little out of season.

Firstly, just enjoy Hermanus. It's a lovely seaside village where you can drive to the New Harbour, visit the Abalone Farm, drive out and walk along some of the lovely beaches and do some wine tasting at one of the wineries in the Hemel en Aarde Valley (it stretches for 7 kms. along the Route 320). Newton Johnson, Bouchard Finlayson and Hamilton Russell are fine wineries, well worth a visit.

De Kelders is also a lovely small fishing village adjacent to Gansbaai - wonderful whale viewing and nice to have a picnic there - it's only a half hour drive from Hermanus.

I really don't think you should wander too far away. However, when you leave Cape Town, be sure to take the scenic route via the coast (R44) and visit Kleinmond (lunch) or any of the small towns that dot the coast line (like Betty's Bay). Harold Porter Botanical Garden is a nice place to stop and have a cup of coffee.

The Overberg is a lovely region with amazing flora. Enjoy.

I agree with Tourist Guide, enjoy Hermanus and it's immediate area. A visit to a few wineries in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, ending up with lunch at Creation is a good way to spend half a day.

Another day visit De Kelders, as suggested, and walk along the cliff path. You are in whale season and they get very close to the shoreline. A magical experience. Then head over to Stamford, walk around the village, it has a really nice atmosphere and then head to Mariana's for lunch, if you are there on a Thursday to Sunday. I always stay in Hermanus so we can have lunch here. You will need to book.

The Overberg also has some fantastic beaches to walk along. My favourites are Grotto Beacch, near Hermaus or Pearly Beach, close to Gansbaai.

Do not forget the penguin colony at Stony point at Betty's Bay and the Harold Porter botanical Gardens on the Mountain side of the long (8 Km) drive through Betty's Bay. A hike up Leopard's Kloof is well worth it.
