Cape Town to Tsitsikamma in 5 days?

We're travelling to South Africa for a wedding next January in the Cape Winelands. We have 5 nights to fill between that and a final 2 nights in Cape Town... a chore I know!

We're planning to drive (at least part of) the Garden Route, and I was hoping for some advice on how far is too far to drive in 5 days?

We want to see as much as we can, but not all from the car window!

I'd like to make it to Tsitsikamma for a couple of days of activities, but given that we need to drive there and back, is this doable?

We also like the look of Knysna, but having read some of the forums here, it seems pretty developed?

Thanks in advance

Tsitsikamma is around 700km from CT. For locals thats easily doable, but I know some European folks balk at the distance. But - 5 days is very short to be driving all the way up there.

There so many places to visit along the GR (I'm sure other TA locals will wade in here). The one thing I would suggest is driving to one place, and staying there, taking day drives if you want.

I would go to Nature's Valley. In fact, I would head straight there. But then I'm a local :-)

And I would stay away from Knysna (even though it has plenty to offer) - that's just me. It's good for a stop and look around, and then some food and drink. But it's by far the most commercialised town on the Garden Route, and does get very full of

people.

Thanks for the tips

Nature's Valley does look very beautiful. Would you recommend it as a place to base ourselves or to visit for the day(s)? If as a base, can you recommend any accomodation?

Knysna seemed like a good compromise - not so far to drive and plenty to do over 4/5 days.

Thanks again

I you want some peace and tranquility, Nature's Valley is for you. Did I mention the beach is the best in the world :-)

Stay there the whole time if you want this kind of experience. Remember that it very easy to take drives up and down the coast from NV as well, so if you do feel you want to explore a bit, it is certainly an option.

I had the name of a fine place nearby, but can't for the life of me remember it. Will scratch around.

natures valley is one of my favorite spots in SA ,but its about 15miles from the main road one pub/eating house( from memory) and the beach is spectacular but the sea is dangerous there , with some big rips .But in the night sky you can see all the milky way no light polution nothing like it

We've just booked a similar trip for April 2009 and are doing 3 days in Nature's Valley, staying at Lilypond lodge which is very near the beach. Take a look at TA reviews. We then decided on 2 days at Amanzi island lodge in Kynsna and 1 night at De Kloof's in Swellendam. Obviously can't recommend any of these yet, but was guided by Go2Africa and TA reviws.

Having spent 4 weeks on my first trip to SA in March, we spent 5 nights at Knysna. It was really central and very easy for day trips to George, Oudsthoorn, Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay, Mossell Bay etc. For a wonderful virtually deserted beach, Brenton on Sea is just round the corner too. It is a small town with a great waterfront with loads of good restaurants.

We broke our journey as we had plenty of time but some people we met at Lalibela Game Reserve were driving to Cape Town from way past Port Elizabeth in one day so I think that is what I would do. The roads are really good without the hoards of traffic you get around your neck of the woods.

For accommodation look at portfolio collection guest houses. All 6 of our guest houses were from this booklet and all were unbelievably good.

When in January. Up to 10th/12th January, the Garden Route is very busy as all the locals are on holiday.
