Wine Tastings Christmas / January - need to book?

We have a week in the winelands in early January and woud like to know whether it is possible to just turn up at wine-tastings, or whether we need to book in advance.

We prefer to travel without plans - just taking each day as it comes, but have been advised to book restaurants, wine-tastings and pretty much anything else we want to do in advance since it is the main holiday season... it it really this bad?

We have a car, and are not too particular about which vineyards and restaurants we visit.

Bookings are only advisable if there is somewhere particular you want to go and will be upset if you miss it. I dont think thats true in your case so dont worry about booking.

Sure there are lots of people, but there are also LOTS of wine estates and restaurants. And if you are only a couple, it wont be difficult to find places.
