Public holiday - 1st May

Hi,

I just found out that on the 1st May it is workers day in SA and is a public holiday. This is our only full day to visit some wineries. Will this be an issue since it is a Sunday and a public holiday?

Thanks,

Daniela

The issue is not the Public Holiday. The effect of this will be on Monday May 2nd. As May 1st is a Sunday, May 2nd is the actual public holiday.

The issue is that the majority of Wine Estates are, anyway, closed on Sundays. Remember these are primarily working Agricultural businesses not just tourist attractions. That said many of the more tourist oriented wine estates, especially those with restaurants, are open on Sunday's - at least until after lunch. There are still around 60 estates open on Sunday in the Stellenbosch region, out of around 220 total. There are others in adjoining regions also. So you should be able to put together a good day - although you may not be able to get to a specific estate which you wanted to visit. Here is the list of Stellenbosch estates open on Sundays : http://www.wineroute.co.za/sundays.asp

For those interested in visiting on Monday May 2nd there will be a similar problem, as the majority of estates close on public holidays. Probably about the same number will be open (but not the same ones!). The best is to get a 2011 copy of Platter's South African Wines (available in any bookshop or on-line). This gives full details of opening hours of every wine estate in South Africa. As well as details of all their wines!
