Neither town actually has a beach if that's important. You have to cross by ferry (foot passengers only) or water taxi to the islands.
I agree Tavira would suit, provided you are happy with the beach situation if relevant.
Both are nice towns, you wont go wrong in either.
Thanks to you all for the info, what do ye think of Cabanas De Tavira?,
would that be a better option as a base?,I think we will go East for a week as we have been going to the Algarve since 1977 (Praia Da Rocha with just 2 hotels) and have been in most of the resorts in Western Algarve and it would be interesting to see the difference, we can hop on a train and head back west
if we don't like it.
