Depends on when. If in-season, Punta del Este, or better, Jose Ignacio close by Punta. If out of season, Mar del Plata, because it's big enough to have restaurants and such open during off-season.

I will be in BA for two weeks in late October and the first week of November. Will it likely be warm enough for the beach at Punta del Este? Hoped to spend a day or two relaxing outside the city but don't want to spend it on a beach by myself or if restaurants, etc are not yet open. Thoughts?

Your dates are a little too early for Punta/Jose Ignacio. The weather could be warm enough for sunbathing (not for swimming), or it could be too cool. Some restaurants will be open (more on weekends), but many will still be closed. There won't be many people.

PuntaLugano, thanks for the weather information regarding Punta del Este. I might just get a little sun at one of the BA parks.

Puntalugano is correct. Not many people in Punta in october, but yes many people from baires that own houses there, like to go in october and november when the weather starts to get nice, and it's calm and beautiful. It will be colder in the nights, and you could have some days that are not hot, but more likely nice-sunny weather... and many people will go for a swim if the water is warm- like sometimes it is.

have fun in punta, or at the bench in the park!

i forgot to tell you some restaurants that will be open in october, in punta are: Lo de Tere (en el puerto); In José Ig. you will have: La Huella, Lucy's, Típico, etc. Close to la punta you will have Bungalow Swizo, in La Barra you will have Flo, many places for "chivito" the typical Uruguay steak, and a couple of places for pizza. Then, in Maldonado and in Punta's center you will have restaurants and cafés that are open all year long. have fun!!

There are also several beach resorts within Argentina about 5 hours bus ride from BA. They are a lot cheaper than Uruguay but there beaches are not as nice. However, dining, shopping and many other activities are abudant. They are an alternative depending on your time and budget.

If you want to relax and be entertained go to Mar del Plata - miles of beaxches, 24 hour fun, large range of hotels and restaurants, boat and road tours, and only 250 miles (about 5 hours by bus).

You dont want to spend too much time travelling, so why Punta off season? If you take the ferry from BsAs to Colonia, it takes 1 hour and you can stay at the Sheraton, just on the beach; if it´s too cold for swimming in the river, you´ll always have the chance of the indoor pool; you´ll get historical cultural getaway, golf, beach, sunbathing...
