Walking around BA. Good tango shows.

Hello,

My wife loves walking in streets where there are cafes, good shops, unique buildings that define the city you are visiting. Is it safe walking in streets such as Recoleta?

Also, any recommendations for good tango shows. Not the tourist trap ones.

Any tips or pointers?

Thank you all

Absolutely, just take the normal precautions - don't walk around drunk or on drugs, don't flash money, if an area does not seem/feel safe leave. Enjoy.

You described Recoleta very nicely.

It also describes parts of Palermo too. And San Telmo :)

All the neighborhoods have their own character and are chock full of cafes, shops and the city is rich in architecture.

There is another thread right now with a list of good ideas for Tango shows.

I live in Recoleta and feel quite safe all the time. But I still stay aware of where I am, who is close to me and I never carry anything that is easily snatched or stolen.

Blending in is the best thing you can do .. no flash purse, jewelry etc and enjoy yourself ..

The weather is getting better each day, long sunny days and beautiful nights.. hurry. :)

All tango shows are touristy but that doesn't mean they are not enjoyable.

For non-touristy tango, you need to go to a milonga where the locals dance social tango for themselves, not for an audience.

Dear Brandon,

I agree with the others, as usual!

A little more info for tango shows-

Tango is typical from Buenos Aires. Although it has spread out all over the country, it is a city dance. This means that not only international tourist go to Tango Shows, also people from other provinces.

Most of them are theater quality (my favourites are Carlos Gardel, Tango Porteño and Café los Angelitos)- and the best way to see Tango in its maxium splendor.

But, as tangocherie suggested, if you would like a less "show" and more interactive experience, also an opportunity to mix with locals and to see normal people dancing tango (this means not just professionals) a milonga would be the best option.

Some of our favourites are;

- La Catedral

- Club Gricel

- Salon Canning

I hope you enjoy very much your time in our city!
