Best rate/method of money exchange

The official bank exchange rate, bank fees and limit restrictions were a deterrent for us to use the ATMs. Fortunately, we (Canadians) brought enough USD so if we weren't paying with credit card, we paid in USD and received pesos in change. In this way we saved a lot of money on banking fees (limit was 1000 pesos per transaction) and exchange (6 pesos per USD). We found restaurants willing to pay 10.50 pesos per USD! Some establishments post their exchange in the window or a the till so keep your eyes open. Money exchange on the street is minimum $100 USD and they have to take you somewhere off the street as this is not a legal transaction. Much more risky than the alternative or just paying in USD and getting pesos in change.

The downside is many places would not give you a good exchange rate if you pay in US$. Many people exchanges at Florida street or ask the concierges and staff from temporary rental companies where to go to get the blue rate. Last time I was in BA (that was about 4 months ago I went to DADA in Retiro and they would only accept US$ at the official rate. The same thing happened with many taxi drivers. If you bring 100 bills in good conditions and you go to the right places you’d be able to make the most out of the parallel market.

We didn't always want to exchange by ute hundreds. The street blue market exchange we tried was in micro central but once you agree to the exchange you must follow the exchanger to a location off the street. This doesn't always make people feel comfortable. The restaurants were the highest and most reliable exchange for us. We found easy 10:1 exchange vs the bank at 6:1. This was 6 weeks ago.

Some shops will buy USD if you want to avoid Calle Florida. Try one near Ugarteche and Cabello (the shop is on the north side of Cabello and says "Comprar Oro" on its window). Last October, when the official rate was 5.5:1, I got 9.5:1 there.

We got to BA on Thursday and rented an apartment through BYT and the agent that met us at the apt. changed our dollars at the rate of 11 to 1. Much safer than going to Florida and I doubt that we could do much better there. It has gone down a bit since January when it got up to over 12. If we want more, he will come to our apt. and he said if any turn out to be fake, he will take them back. A big score!
