Puerto Madryn DIY

Hello

We are traveling to Puerto Madryn in the next few days and we were wondering if it is possible to do stuff by yourself or if you have to go on tours to do things like go to the park?

If you want to see whales near the shore you can go to Playa las Canteras. You can take taxi for 230 peso return. Taxi driver will wait for you. If you want to see penguins at Punta Tombo join a tour. This tour may also include dolphins sighting or a visit to Welsh town of Gaiman and the dinosaur museum at Trelew.

Well, but can't you rent a car and go to the peninsula by yourself or go to Punta Tombo and do stuff by yourself?

Yes you can. The entrance fee for Punta Tombo is 78 peso. Not sure about Peninsular Valdes. Didn't go there but you can drive there yourself.

You can absolutely drive yourself for both Valdez and Tombo, and since you're just there to look at wildlife driving is kind of nice because you can determine where and how long you want to stop. Only thing is that there isn't much in terms of directions or signage on the roads so do your homework beforehand. Also much of the roads are gravel so keep that in mind in terms of potential car damage. Depending how many ppl you have, it might actually be more economical to do a tour...for me and my wife when we went, we calculated it would cost about the same to rent a car vs tours so we did a tour to save the hassle.

And yeah, no whales in March, but dolphins might still in season...we did a dolphin boat tour en route to Tombo and it was great as we saw lots of dolphins and some even came right up and swam with the boat
