El Calafate in March/April

Hello all, we plan to tour S. America next feb for 6 months and plan to travel down to El Calafate to use as a base to see glaciers and torres del paine in March/April...cant be more precise at this time i'm afraid.

We also understand the weather is getting colder as we get past Holy Week

As we intend to spend most of our time in warmer areas we generally werent planning on fleeces, gloves and Gortex etc. but been advised not to miss this part of world!!!

What clothing is advised for this trip and should we be booking accomodation well in advance????

Thanks in advance.

Will

Will, march and april are the most steady months for the weather in Southern Patagonia...chilly nights and days, but clear skies...anyhow fleeces, Goretex jackets are always useful, in this part of the our country...itś Patagonia.

Hotel bookings should me made in advance, due heavy demand from October thru April

Thanks for replying so quickly. The problem we are facing is we are unsure dates we will arrive, best guess is sometime in April as we dont want to rush other parts of our trip.

From your message i understand that booking hotels is a must which wouldnt be possible but how about hostel availability ...do they too require booking in advance????

We really want to come and visit but are reluctant to book hotels in advance in case we cant make the dates and are looking for other options.

Any help much appreciated.....

Will

OK Will, set up dates, organize yourself a bit better, before go for bookings...but you must realize that Southern Patagonia is the highlight everywhere, hostels is another alternative, in advance ,you can get very good alternatives in accomodations...we do have a lot of israelies, searching for hostels too...and they come in huge groups, set up dates...and from there on, start planning your itinerary...do not fall asleep

Right...after a bit of thought we have decided to book four nights in el calafate mid april...we know weather is getting colder but hope there will still be tours opeating this time of year.

However need some advice regarding the direct bus service from BA. Are there daily services daily this time of year, including Sundays ???? Are any days more favourable to arrive than others??

We have also read elsewhere that a number of buses arrive late, not that this is a problem. Can anyone confirm please??

Thanks alot

there are daily buses from BA to Calafate...it takes 40 hours.

Buses leave from Retiro Bus Terminal in BA, and go to Rio Gallegos(36 hours)...from there you will have to connect to Calafate ( 4 hours)

Bus Companies are :

AndesMar , TAC, EL Pinguino

Cost of Executive coach ( one way) 336.- pesos

Buenos Aires...

you'll be here for 6 months so I think you can plan as "you go along". Bring warm clothes and light for the different temps in the different places.

Have fun!!
