Help with What to Wear in March/April - mini trekking

Will be in El Calafate March 30th through April 1st. We plan on doing the mini trekking. Will be travelling through other warmer parts of Argentina, so we want to minimize the heavy clothing we pack. Please advise what we absolutely need as far as clothing and shoes in El Calafate. Are tennis shoes OK? If not is there a place to rent the appropriate shoes? Thank you so much for the advise.

We were there last year at about the same time. We only brought tennis shoes but after doing the All Glacier Boat tour the day before and it was raining we decided tennis shoes wouldn't be enough. We rented hiking boots and rain pants at one of the local outfitters. There were four of us - my notes say that 3 pairs of rainpants, 4 pairs of boots and one rain jacket were $70. Also, we were there for the first light snow of the season - beautiful - but be prepared.

You can get away with wearing tennis shoes since the paths aren't particularly steep or muddy.

The weather in Patagonia in March/April is probably the same as a cold winter in Miami, except with more wind and perhaps a little more rain.

Good sturdy well fitting tennis shoes should be OK- the crampons are very heavy and pull on your shoes. I had hiking shoes which worked well overall- they're about the same size and wieght as my sneakers but a little sturdier. Bring layers and have a waterproof outer layer. We were blessed with great weather but were told it almost always rains on the glacier.

As far as packing for the trip, plan on doing laundry in El Calafate- there are lots of laundry services with a 2-3 h turnaround time. We really didn't see laundry service anywhere else. You don't need fancy clothes anywhere, including Buenos Aires but have at least one decent outfit if you plan to go to nice restaurants.
