Hi we would like to rent a car and drive from Mendoza to Usuaia, maybe take 6 days to do just that with overstay in 2 or three places. Is that recommended, and if no, any other better options?
Thanks!

One way car rentals in Argentina are difficult to find and very expensive. The distance would prohibit you returning the car to Mendoza. However, have a look at the online booking websites to see if one car company will accomodate and if the price is agreeable.
Have a look at http://www.ruta0.com for road and travel planning. Also, www.welcomeargentina.com, and http://www.interpatagonia.com for travel planning ideas.
What many people do is fly between the destinations then rent a car and do more local exploring.
Sorry LunaAmsterdam, but this plan is not recommendable. For reasons Ricardo already mentioned (very high drop-off cost) but also because of the distance (3.300 km). You will have to follow the ruta 3, all along the coast of Patagonia, a long and boring road in my opinion.....better spend your time and money by renting a car locally and fly in between the main cities.
Ok thanks so much for your advice. And what about driving from Mendoza to Bariloche, is that recommended and it is that a more scenic road and less boring? Maybe from there we can take a flight to Usuaia. I understand that the distance between cities can be a disadvantage. 3300 km is al lot.
And from Usuaia to Buenos Aires, what is the best way to travel this distance, by bus, car, plane? I guess that maybe the distance here is also a disadvantage to drive it?
Any advice is more than welcome!
Thanks again!
The area around Bariloche and into the Lake District of Chile offer some exciting travel. Again, you are better off renting a car in Bariloche and doing some extensive travel between the two countries. The car rental company will provide the insurance for Chile, also. After that then fly to either El Calafatr and repeat the same touring between the two countries.
Edited: 11 years agoThe best way to travel between Ushuaia and Buenos Aires is via airtravel due to the long distance. You can do this by bus(http://www.plataforma10.com) bus will take the whole of 2-3 days of constant travel.
There are many beautiful destinations within Argentina, but travel between them is long and can be quite boring.
Thanks everyone for the great advice :)
My last question will be:
is Usuahia recommended, is it something not to miss? Because it's a long way from Mendoza or Bariloche and we'll take some time to explore around Bariloche, will it be worth while to also do that part of Argentina?
Dear Luna,
I think Ushuaia is a beautiful place, Beagle Channel at the front and the mountains at the back give to is an unforgettable looking.
Some of the highlights are Tierra del Fuego National Park, Harberton Ranch, Pinguin Colony, lake Fagnano, Martial Glacier, between others.
On the other hand, although I agree with the others (rental car drop off can be expensive) I still think the Route 40 between Mendoza and El Calafate is amazing (although you would need more a 4x4 than a car).
Enjoy it very much!
