Baños has not been evacuated; the communities in the immediate area of the volcano were on voluntary evacuation. The U.S. State Department recommends limiting travel there, but they are often over-cautious. I highly recommend registering your travel plans with State and get on the mailing list for the consulate advisories; you'll get their emails in a more timely manner than they are posted on their Web site. Smart Traveler Enrollment Program <https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/> .

Ecuador's Geophysical Institute updates seismic activity regularly, and right now Mama's still very active <http://www.igepn.edu.ec/> (in Spanish).

I am in Baños now. It is amazing to see the volcano erupting at night, though visibility is limited. There is a lot of ash in the air today. Some people are wearing masks. We are limiting our hiking because of the ash but otherwise, this is exactly where I want to be. When the wind blows away the ash at night, we can see the lava flowing slowing.

For me, this is a chance of a lifetime.

It would not surprise me if they do evacuate if the ash becomes heavy but that just means that you would need to travel somewhere else close by. The town itself is protected from lava flows by another volcano in fron of Tungurahua.

Hello,

I heard from friends that it is nice in Banos now and the volcano is not active.

If anyone has photos, that they are willing to share, of the volcano at night, I would sincerely appreciate a copy. My instant camera cannot measure up.
