Is a visit safe again??

We are planning to stay a couple of days in Tucson, and were thinking about visiting Tubac and Nogales. I heard some disturbing things about crossing the border into the town. Would you recommend visiting the town in september 2010? We are Dutch and would cross the border on foot. Any streets which are a must see?

Thank you!

IMO, Mexico is a risky place to visit. No predicting when or where the kidnappings, beheadings, shootings etc. will occur. What is reported in the Arizona Republic is alarming.

But, I am a retired female who frequently travels alone. On one hand, I am brave enough to do so, but, on the other hand, I am cautious.

The drug wars that were hyped up by the media so much haven't stopped, but have died down just a bit. I think you're absolutely safe in walking over there. You may find it a bit disappointing though, as that scare and drop in tourism a year or so ago, plus this new bad economy, has driven quite a few of the shops in Nogales, Sonora out of business.

If you want to go just to go to Mexico, then you should be fine. Don't plan on a lot though.

We're Dutch as well and crossed the border several times from several places, last time from Columbus, New Mexico. Just out of curiousity. It was rather disappointing and we didnot feel "op ons gemak". Getting back was quite a hassle. Don't forget your passports.

Checkthe Pima CommunityCollege website in Tucson and see if they have one of their 1-day escorted tours (by van) to visit some of the Father Kino sites while you are in TUS.. This would get you a bit more into the countryside, the tours are interesting and, when I last went, safe.

Two questions. Why are you going and what do you expect to see or experience?

I have traveled to Mexico many times over the years and our best trips have always been the ones where we go deeper into the country and stay longer. Day trips and walks across the border will only take you to less desirable places. You can find some good prices on native crafts such as Talavera pottery. But unless you plan to invest in large quantities, you can find plenty of inventory and decent prices on the US side of the border, especially in places like Tubac.

If you just want to say you've been to Mexico, save it for another time and go to a better, safer, more inspiring place.

We crossed into Nogales once and that was enough. At the time we had my MIL with us in a wheel chair and when we parked in AZ a young Mexican boy ran up to us and grabbed the wheel chair and said - "Me take Grandma into Mexico." My husband had to run to catch up to him and my MIL was scared out of her wits. Then when we actually were in the town a guy walked up to my DIL and I and said, "Hey ladies - let me be the first to rip you off." Needless to say we were not impressed with the people or the stores in the market ares. We did not even eat there but crossed back into AZ. Will not go again.

To the question why we want to go there; I read a posting which said, Nogales was a nice town, well worth visiting, do some shopping and have a nice authentic Mexican meal in one of the restaurants. After reading your replies, i think it would be best to forget about Nogales and do out shopping and dining in Tubac.

In an earlier stage I was thinking about crossing the US/MEX border in San Diego/Tijuana, but it seams the problems are simmular to the ones in Nogales.

Thank you all for advising me. I can leave my bulletproof vest in Holland LOL

Tijuana's nasty. Nogales is better.

There isn't much of a reason to go to Mexico in the first place, yes. It's starkly different from the US side though, so it may be interesting for you. I'm of drinking age and don't need cheap dentistry or prescription drugs, so I never go down there. But I would consider it if I had friends in from out of town.

"nice town, well worth visiting, do some shopping and have a nice authentic Mexican meal ..." that was the case until 2 or 3 years ago. border violence and fights between drug gangs have chased away the tourists. while no visitors have ever been involved in any of the violence, the randomness has led to giving advice not to go. several of the restaurants and shops in the tourist area have closed. there is nothing historic or even particularly picturesque to see. the rest of nogales, other than the tourist area, is both a busy and prosperous business and industrial city and full of poverty. if you want to experience mexico, you need to take a trip deeper into mexico, particularly central mexico. more interesting places in the area of northern mexico south of here would be more than a day trip.

you can have the authentic mexican meal at dozens of restaurants in tucson .... the cuisine is the same. there are also many shops in tucson, and a large concentration in tubac south of here but in az, with the same merchandise.
