Nightlife question

Hi,

Deciding where to spend a few nights next April, we like the thought the of all the old bars at night. Can you tell us whether there is regular live music nightly as it might not be a weekend.

You do know that the original "Whiskey Row" is an entire block of authentic, swinging door saloons from the 1880's, right? There might not be live music every night in every saloon, but you will find something happening almost every night as you get closer to the weekend. Just like anywhere else, I wouldn't expect to find a lot of action on a Monday night when everyone has to go to work in the morning and their wallets are flat from the weekend. But you will find boot scootin' most nights of the week.

We will be staying in Scottsdale for the first part but want to stay in a couple of other places too, somewhere characterful so this seemed perfect. Thanks we will try and make it nearer the weekend than the start of the week :-)

Obviously Saturday night is when the entire town gets town apart. All the REAL cowboys come in from the ranches in their fanciest with big shiny trophy belt buckles and scoot all night with their fillies. This is your chance to wear your best, boot cut Wrangler jeans and boots and get in line with the rest of them. This is the real deal, and has been going on for more than a hundred years. There will be live music all up and down the "Row." Get a room at the Hassayampa or similar old west hotel and mosey across Court House Square for all the action.

If you want more old west action, take a squint at Wickenburg, probably the most authentic western town in AZ

This sounds just right! We arrive in Phoenix earlier in the week and are planning on making some day trips from there but wanted somewhere just like this for a couple of nights, we will probably only have one weekend during our trip so this is where we will spend it. We may then move on to Flagstaff for the end of our stay but nothing final yet. Thanks for advice.

I will look at Wickenburg too, is this worth a night over or should we incorporate it into our day trips?

I just reread your other thread, "Next US destination?" I have posted a "must see" to it regarding Phoenix.

Wickenburg can be done in a nice day drive but I recommend an over night, preferably Friday.. It's only an hour from the valley. You can ride horses, visit the gold mine and ghost town. Seen the cowboy museum, wander the streets downtown, have some home made ice cream at the parlour (which might have live music at night). Stay at one of the dude ranches or one of the motels in the town. Get up in the morning and stroll over to one of the many authentic 1940's-'50's roadside diners for a proper American breakfast. Try the steak and eggs. Rub shoulders with the locals and see how they are dressed. Then go around the corner to the mercantile for a complete get up of the real stuff. Now you are ready for the easy drive over the hill to Prescott to wear you new duds that night on Whiskey Row.

Happy Trails!!!

Thank you for this, we have been many places without any prior knowledge and always found we missed the 'good bits' or found them all too late. This sounds just great.
