1st time Visitor to Arizona

Spending 7 nights at the Sheraton Desert Oasis in Scottsdale. Looking for advice on things to see/do. Would like to see Sedona and GC also and wouldn't mind staying one night close to either to make things easier. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance

tomkc53, what time of year are you coming? It makes a big difference as far as our suggestions....take a look at the Things to Do and Travel Guide and even the Restaurants suggestions under "More On Scottsdale" on the left side of this page and let us know what interests you more...hiking? shopping? golfing? eating?

Regarding GCNP and Sedona... Sedona is 2 hours north of Scottsdale. GCNP is another 2 hours beyond that. Contact www.grandcanyonlodges.com to see if you can book a night inside the park. If you can, drive there, see the GC, stay over night and return to Scottsdale via Sedona the following day. If no room at the park, plan to stay the night in Sedona and do the GCNP on either day one or two, with drive times in mind.

Redrox recommendations are very good, you will love seeing both Sedona and GCNP and this is a good way to accomplish that. Pin down the night you want away and book that now, the park fills up fast, any place on the website provided above is great for this close to your stay.

In Scottsdale you are in a great central location. Check out Taliesin West, art galleries in downtown, Old Town shops, Desert Botanical Garden, hiking in the McDowells, The Heard Museum in Phx, a drive out to Saguaro Lake for breakfast at the diner, a spa day at one of the excellent resorts in town, see a DBacks game at Chase Field...

It will be hot in May, it is not our hottest month, but it will be hot, about 100F. All of your outdoor activities should be done in the morning. Your cooler temps will be as you drive north. Hottest time of the day is around 4pm, coolest is just before sunrise. Plan accordingly, drink plenty of water throughout the day and you should be just fine.

Thanks for all the help. I was able to book a night at Yavapai Lodge, it was the only one with availability that week.

That's great! You will love being inside the park - it really quiets down when the day trippers go home....make sure you step outside after dark and see the amazing night sky. If you have a chance, have a meal at El Tovar, breakfast there is the best in the park. Bring a small flashlight to get around in the dark, lighting is minimal. If you get up to see the sunrise, grab some hot coffee at the Bright Angel Lodge (bar area), have a warm jacket and watch the sun come up over one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Congrats and Kudos for acting quickly and decisively to get the room inside the park. Yavapai is always the last to fill up because it is just a little farther from the rim. But being inside the park is the most important thing. And yes, you can easily walk from your room.

Do bring a flashlight because it will be very dark after the sun goes down and before the sun rises in the morning. And there will be wildlife walking along the trails and in the forest beside you; mostly deer and elk. Nothing to fear, but in the darkness one can be startled. And do bring a jacket or clothes that you can layer. Night time temps will be near freezing, even in May. If you look at forecast temps or averages, the low will always occur just before dawn.

I was in Scottsdale a couple weeks ago and had a great meal at FnB on E. Stetson Dr. If you don't mind a bit of a drive. it is a nice change from the hotel-centric dining scene in much of Scottsdale, and there is a bit of a pedestrian-friendly nightlife scene around the Scottsdale Waterfront. Also, if you want outdoor activity and like hiking or mountain biking, the McDowell Sonoran Desert Preserve is worth a visit and the main entrance off Thompson Peak Pkwy not far from where you are staying. But be aware it will be hot and there is little shade, so wear lots of sunscreen, bring plenty of water, and bring light clothing and a hat to cover up when you have had enough sun..
