40+ most days, usually by about noon or 1pm.

Sitting around a pool should be okay, but you should stay in the pool as much as possible.

Late afternoon average temp will be 105-110 degrees. However, early moring temps should be in the mid to high 70's and OK until 9:30 or 10 AM. I would not suggest sitting in the sun at the pool, but swimming will be OK as well as sitting under a shaded pool umbrella! Bring plenty of SPF 30 sun screen anyway.

Also keep in mind that the temperatures called out in weather reports are in the shade. If you're in the direct sun, add about 10 degrees F. The sun is very, very intense here.

You absolutely must be in shade to sit around the pool - umbrella, arbor, awning, .....unless in the very early morning or very very late in the evening.

You will want to get in the pool periodically to cool off.

Even in the shade, wear a hat. There will be reflected light even under shade. Dark glasses, sunblock, keep hydrated.

Good luck on your trip!

Better Advice;

Go to this link/place it is the thing to do in Aug. in the Valley of the Sun to cool off.

http://www.saltrivertubing.com

It is a tube ride down the Salt River. I did it 25 years ago and it is more sophistcated now. Then you rented a tube or found one and were on your own.

Now they have a complete shop and food via the usual FF onsite to facilitate what they bill as the best picnic river ride in the AZ if not the USA.

And better than that they have shuttles to get you up river and back, which is a big improvement on the old 1 car someone sit it out arrangement in the past. The river temp is always around 66-70 degrees as it is released from the Roosevelt Dam upstream from the bottom of the lake behind the dam.

Good luck.

darcey, i really don't think sunbathing will be possible!

My girlfriend and i stayed in scottsdale at the end of april this year, daytime highs were around 95-100, it is so intense laying by the pool!

Summer temps - mega - i stayed in scottsdale in 2003 and it was already 90 by 10am!

We found april just abouy berable, we were in the pool every 30 mins to cool off!

recommend a hotel with pool misters or fans!

Credentials first -- I'm english and go red in the sun. My Dad thinks 65 degrees is "sweaty". I've lived in Phoenix for 10+ years.

The summers are REALLY hot.

You can get a serious sunburn in less than 15 minutes. Not kidding. And by serious I mean bordering on needing medical treatment (really).

If you are not used to serious heat, it will really tire you out. Always carry some water with you -- you'll need gallons of the stuff. Also make sure your entire day is not spent outside.

Temps in August are sometimes starting to go down a little. Sometimes. But you can still expect regular 110 degree days. Oddly enough, 100-110 is just really hot but kind of bearable. Over 110 is unbearably hot. It is not unusual for temps to break 120.

You may be able to stand sitting by the pool first thing in the morning and from early evening onwards. If you are in the water, you'll do better. But staying by the pool all day will not be fun.

Water water water. and bring some water too :-)

GandN

We are also visiting in August, we have been there for 100 degrees in October, - we did Florida in 105 and high humidity - we are hoping it is not as uncomfortable as Florida was. How unbearable is it after all there are so many people choosing to live there.

We have no intentions of sunbathing just going to relax

If it's so darn hot here how come we keep growing by 100,000 or so a year? I must say that having been born and raised and lived in Iowa for 40+ years there is only one place that I've been that I would rather live, weather wise, and that is San Diego.
