Staying in Old Scottsdale - do we need a car?

Hello - we are flying into Phoenix and plan to stay in Old Scottsdale. What is the best way to get there if we don't rent a car? Also we'd like to do day hikes at Pinnacle Peak and other parks - are there shuttle buses or public transit, or do we need a car to get out there? Thanks!

You might be able to get away with not renting a car if you stayed in Old Town. However, Pinnacle Peak is about 25 miles north, and there are NO shuttles or buses going that way. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve has a lot of hiking trails, but it is 10 miles away or more. The green belt is probably closest, and it is almost a mile away.

Old Town and Downtown Scottsdale are adjacent to one another, and you can walk around the two fairly easily. There are lots of shops and restaurants besides hotels and motels, and you could probably use Super Shuttle to get from the airport to wherever you you plan to say. However if you want to venture further, you need a car. Public transit is abysmal here.

How long will you be here and when are you coming? If you want to do anything outside of the downtown area you will need a car and i agree with abigguy and everyone else who posts here, you will want to get a car and get out and explore.

Thanks for both of your responses. We're thinking of visiting for 5 days in May and while we just want to relax at our resort, we do also want to spend time exploring. Maybe we can just rent a car for a day or two.

That's a good idea, there is a Dollar counter in Chaparral Suites and I think Avis still has a counter in the Doubletree PV Resort. It starts to get hot in May, so plan any outdoor exertion, hiking especially for early in the morning, the coolest time of the day is just before sunrise and it goes up from there! It will make a difference in your safety and the enjoyment of your vacation.
