Off-the-beaten Track Day Trips from Scottsdale

I will be in Scottsdale for a week at the end of June/beginning of July. Right now I am planning to rent a car for a few days. Any ideas what would be great to see apart from the usual tourist places?

Thanks!!!

If the "Old West" is your thing, Tombstone is about four hours drive.

It's going to be very, very hot in town so I would head up to small historic mining town of Jerome, include a pass through the old courthouse square in Prescott. It will be about 10 degrees cooler. Also small mountain towns of Pine and Strawberry are about an hour away in the forest and are charming and cooler.

If you head towards Pine and Strawberry make a stop at Tonto Natural Bridge. Very beautiful and cooler there by the water.

Goldfield Ghosttown and Apache Trail az88 (last 22 miles unpaved). Don't miss Tortilla Flat. In the Payson, Pine and Stawberry direction you'll find Tonto Natural Bridge SP.

We also like to drive Scvottdale Rd north out of the city into the desert to places like Care Free Cave Creek and Anthem and on to Lake Pleasant.
