scottsdale in January

As a middle aged couple, which hotels/area should we consider and what are the main attractions? Also if there for four days, should we bring golf clubs?

There are many excellent choices. Some personal favorites:

Arizona Biltmore--classis and classy.

The Phoenician--also classy/elegant but not pretensious. Great pool set up, excellent fitness center, and overall beautiful property, with nice on site golf setting and amenities.

JWMarriot Camelback--nice southwestern feel to it and great spa.

Four Seasons--location in north Scottsdale could be a pro or con...but a very nice place...smaller in scale than these others.

If you like golf, you will LOVE the Valley of the Sun in January. While I really like the Camelback Inn, it is not really a golf resort. You will have to travel to various venues. As noted, the Four Seasons is very remote to other activities.

Of all mentioned, I would go with the world famous Arizona Biltmore Resort, a Waldorf Astoria property. It has two courses just outside the lobby. The "old course" with the lush, mature vegetation has great views of the city. The "desert course" is so close to the mountains you can almost reach out and touch them. In addition, there are 9 swimming pools, the finest dining and wine selections in Phoenix and within 1/4 mile there is a wide array of other high end restaurants and elegant shopping at the Biltmore Fashion Park. In short, bring your clubs.

Happy Trails!!!

Depending when you are coming, look at the Fairmont Princess Resort. Adjacent is the TPC which will host the WM Phx Open starting Jan. 27, which is on the Stadium Course, which is closed to play now. But the Champions Course is open and beautiful. Also the Westin Kierland has a great course and also The Boulders up in way north Scottsdale. Many country clubs offer public play as well, such as Starfire. Even if you don't play golf these are excellent choices for the resorts alone.

It depends what you want. I'll assume since you posted for Scottsdale that you want Scottsdale and not other resorts. The Phoenician, which is really in Scottsdale, is a lovely facility, and has a wonderful spa. It is also close to Old Town, which has a number of art galleries and decent shopping in Scottsdale's oldest operating mall. Don't worry though, it's a up-to-date facility with designer stores. This time of year you can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Old Town, and the Desert Botanical Garden and the Phoenix Zoo are close as well.

In north Scottsdale we have a Westin resort with a golf course and shopping close, and someone has already mentioned the Princess.

In central Scottsdale, we have the Talking Stick Resort and Casino. The TSR not only boasts a lovely casino and a theater with decent shows, it has a nice restaurant on one of the upper floors the gives a lovely view of the valley to accompany great food and refreshing drinks.

All throughout Scottsdale you'll find restaurants from multinational fast food chains to local fine dining establishments, including one or two that have been frequented by celebrities.

It's really a matter of what you like to do, because we've pretty much got it all in Scottsdale...except a beach...and we even have one of those in the summer.

We love the Phoenician and the golf course runs right up against Camelback mountain. Really gorgeous.
