Where to stay - Troon North vs. McDowell Mountain Ranch

We are travelling to Scottsdale/Phoenix for first time. We are taking our 4y.o. and 8y.o. children. Trying to figure out where to stay. We have it narrowed down to a condo near the McDowell Mountain Ranch area and a condo off of the Troon North golf course. Both condos are nice, although the Troon North one is a little bigger and a little nicer. However, it seems a little further out from things to see/do in Scottsdale and Phoenix than McDowell Mountain. Seems to come down to a nicer condo vs. a better, more convenient location. Any thoughts????

Hi pshah and welcome to the forum! Yes, you have done a good job of comparing the differences between the two neighborhoods. Both are excellent choices. The McDowell Mtn area is loaded with many casual dining options which might be nice for your young ones. The neighborhood is very nice and but it will be a bit busier as far as traffic and population. You are very close to the 101 freeway for getting around. Troon is a country club community and a bit higher end, if you have golf course views or mountain views from your condo that would be great, it is a beautiful area with plenty of natural desert surroundings.

What time of year are you coming?

Thanks for the info! We definitely will be doing casual dining and making a lot of meals in our condo rather than anything upscale with the kids. The Troon North condo does have golf course/condo view. We are arriving in late March. With the kids, we will likely be spending about half of our time at the condo- which makes the nicer Troon North condo more appealing, but will be spending the other half of our time out and about- which makes the McDowell Mountain condo seem better....

The Troon place sounds pretty nice...there are still places to enjoy casual meals and grocery shop up that way, it is just not as densely populated which i find good! You are about 15 minutes from the 101 Freeway, there is traffic as you get closer, that might slow you down as folks commute to work, but it is a small price to pay for a place on the golf course in the desert in my opinion.

The McDowell Mountain condo mentions being right next to Greenbelt for walking/running/biking. Any similar type areas within walking distance of Troon North?

At McDowell you will feel closer to the activity of the city sprawl. I'd choose Troon.

Lots of lovely trails all around Troon. Also very close by, in fact just down the road, is Pinnacle Peak which is a great hike for all. Then there is Pinnacle Peak Patio a neat quirky western steakhouse that is fun.cave Creek Regional Park is nearby and also the town of Cave Creek is a neat place to check out.

We stayed for 3 weeks last year in a condo complex in the McDowell Mountain Ranch area in North Scottsdale and we found it was just not us at all. Nothing wrong with the complex but we found the area surrounding the condo complex very, very busy at all times. Lots of shops, supermarkets around if that is your thing but personally we would rather have gone for the scenic views and the slower pace of life that would be Troon North in hindsight. Both areas are a fair drive - more so the Troon one - from Scottsdale itself and maybe your children would find the Troon area a wee bit boring, although it is very scenic?
