Zion to Sedona In A Day ?

Was wondering if driving from Springdale to Sedona in one day (stopping to see Wupatki and Sunset Crater) is reasonable ? We'll be seeing GCNP later in the trip. We'd being doing this mid-week in mid-June. Am I out of my mind ?

Hi mapnut,

We did that drive in 2006. We left Zion around 2:00 pm. You gain 1 hour when you cross into AZ.

We spent about 2 hours at Sunset Crater and had a late dinner in Sedona around 9:00pm

You are not out of your mind, but you will be doing a great deal of driving.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks rwdw,

I hadn't thought about the time change, I guess because AZ won't be on daylight savings time but UT will ? That helps. And maybe Rte 89 is not quite as slow as it looks based on your experience. Any suggestions on any interesting things to see between the UT/AZ border and Wupatki ?

If no stops, and no delays at Zion Tunnel you can drive Springdale to Sedona in 5 hours. And you are right, Az does not observe daylight saving time (except for Navajo Land). Shortest drive is via Page on us89 but even more scenic is the drive from Kanab to Fredonia and us89A to Jacob Lake and to us89. Marble Canyon, Lees Ferry and Navajo bridges are on your way. Maybe you'll see condors here. Then at the exit to the east entrance of GCNP make a stop in Cameron. The trading post has a restaurant and a huge shopping area. We always recommend to take a taco in the restaurant. Between Flagstaff and Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon is a must stop.

Visiting all these places and Wupatki/Sunset Crater Volcano makes a long day.

And I didnot mention the sights in Page like Antelope Canyon,Glen Canyon Dam and Horseshoe bend overlook.

Thanks Tet, We may just need to drive straight on thru to Wupatki and then down to Oak Creek Canyon to make it a reasonable day of driving. Anyone aware of any tame canoeing or rafting opportunities in the Oak Creek Canyon area (or say within 15-20 miles of Sedona) ?

Well, RedRox, our Sedona expert is back from his vacation and also Janss will know about the rafttrips. Maybe put a new question for this on the Sedona forum. We have never done any rafting there.

Water sports around Sedona are limited to wading and splashing. The creek is spectacular but not suited for water craft.

If rafting is on your list, you might want to make time to do the half day trip at Glen Canyon just south of Page on your drive down from Zion. But it will require adding an overnight along the way. This would also give you a chance to see Antelope Canyon.

Thanks for the input. Looks like rafting is better left for other areas away from Sedona. Given one full day in Sedona (two nights), what would you recommend in terms of activities/recreation for a dad and two elementary school age girls (10 and 8) ? Thanks,

Start with a jeep tour. Continue with hikes.
