Help for Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Sedona Itinerary

I have 8 days and 12 people ranging in age from 6 to 73. What is the best itinerary to hit those spots and do a little hiking? Places to stay in each too? Any must do excursions? Probably flying in to Phoenix.

For the places you want to visit, it would be best to fly into Las Vegas. Returning to Phoenix from Bryce would be an all day drive, and only a few hours to LV. What time of year is the trip? That's an important consideration.

You can go in either direction, LV - GCNP - Page AZ - Zion - Bryce - LV. You will be doing the "must do" excursions by visiting the parks.

Here's what I suggest. Others will likely suggest itineraries.

Day 1- LV-GCNP

Day 2- GCNP

Day 3- GCNP-Page, see Antelope Canyon

Day 4- Page, see Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam & consider half day float trip, then Page-Zion this day or early next

Day 5- Page-Zion

Day 6- Zion

Day 7- Zion-Bryce

Day 8- Bryce-LV

Moving 12 people over all that distance inside of 8 days will be a challenge, but it is possible. You must consider drive times between each destination as about a half day and if you want to spend a full day at any place, you need 2 nights there. By the time you get all the way up to Zion or Bryce you will be a full day's drive away from PHX so the last day getting back is a long one on the road.

Logical direction and stops would be PHX-Sedona and allow 2-3 days at Sedona.

Sedona to GCNP for at least one night inside the park at one of the park lodges. www.grandcanyonlodges.com

GCNP to Zion or Bryce will take about 5 hours. 2 nights in Springdale for Zion and one night at Rubys Inn for Bryce and I'm pretty sure we've used up your available time.

If you are coming in warmer weather, it might make more sense and a better plan to scrap Bryce and Zion in favor of a few days at Page after the GCNP. That's only about 5 hours back to PHX and easily as entertaining and fun to visit.

I left out Sedona as I don't think you have time in 8 days to spend 2-3 days there and visit all the other things you want. I agree with RedRox's final comment to concentrate on Sedona, GCNP & Page if flying into Phoenix considering the time you have available.

I think that RedRox and bobbear have given you sage advice. It seems that trying to get to all the places you had listed with 12 people in just 8 days would be a logistical nightmare. Cut back on the number of places for this trip and enjoy your time in each destination. Besides the fewer moves you have to make with the herd, the better.

I like the idea of a Sedona-GC-Page itinerary, if you are flying in and out of Phoenix. If you should use Las Vegas as the entry/exit point, then you could do a trip that includes Zion, Bryce Canyon and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Either would be good trips, however, with the diverse group that you have, maybe the Sedona-GC-Page might work better.

When will you be making this trip? Also, are you going to try to have all 12 of your posse be involved with every activity, or will the kids be going one direction while the greybeards do something else?

When are you visiting? Weather definitely has an influence on activities you might want to take part in. Also, a word of caution for the seniors: lots of these places are at rather high altitudes, especially Grand Canyon South Rim (7,000') and Bryce Canyon (8,000'). If anyone has any respiratory or cardiac issues, they might want to consult a physician before they travel.

If you end up taking Bryce Canyon off the table, you might consider visiting Lake Powell. It's a gorgeous place, and only 4,300' above sea level. Lots of fun activities available too such as half-day float trips (no rapids) on the Colorado River, boat tours (or rentals) on Lake Powell, some good and relatively easy hikes, just to name a few. If you're coming in the middle of summer, though, this area will be VERY hot, so you might want to pass on the hiking and just relax by the lake with a beach umbrella, a cooler and lots of sunscreen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgA2TWxGir0

Those are all amazing places to see. We took the family out west over a year ago...did full loop from Albuquerque thru Arizona, then Utah, southern colorado and down to Santa Fe and back to ABQ. Did the whole loop in 14 days. When I look back at my itinerary...from Sedona to Bryce took us 7 nights and that didn't include looping back to starting point.

We were traveling with 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids). we did a lot and moved a quick pace. Not sure you could see stuff much faster than we did.

Here was our itinerary...it might help to guide you.

Day 1

Arrive Flagstaff (lunch)

View Oak Creek Canyon

Stop at Slide Rock State Park for early afternoon swim

Head into Sedona to see town and have dinner

Day 2

Pink Jeep Tour Sedona (early am)

Hiking and sites (Cathedral Rock, Bell rock, chapel, etc..) (rest of day)

Day 3

-early am drive to Jerome ghost town (you can skip this)

-head to William, AZ for lunch and see train

-head to Grand Canyon...stopped to see film before entering park

-took Sunset tour of Grand Canyon (enjoyed this)...Oscar was our guide, he was great

- spent night in lodge at canyon

Day 4

- woke up for sunrise at GC

- headed to bright angel trail to see the ranger send the mules down with passengers. The speech and prep was so good to watch. Highly recommend seeing this.

- took short hike down part of bright angel trail

- left GC using east exit...and headed north up to Glen Canyon Dam

- stopped at Dam, and looked a Lake Powell

-- continued to Zion NP

- took quick tram ride to get bearings

Day 5

Explore, Hike, Horseback thru Zion NP

Day 6

Rented river hiking gear and hiked the Virgin River at ZNP...so fun.

Rode to Byrce Canyon

Saw sunset at Bryce

Early hike at Bryce to bottom of canyon and back up

Headed to Moab

Hope this helps! It was an amazing trip. We also did Moab, Arches NP, Durango, Mesa Verde, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, Pagosa Springs, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Old route 66, Acoma, Monument Valley. It was all amazing...but our favorite stops were

-- Sedona, GC, ZNP, Bryce and Arches.
