Are Trail Maps Accurate?

We will be in Sedona later this month for one day, two if circumstances allow.

We have friends who are hard core hikers, they mentioned some of the trail maps they picked up at the visitor center about ten years ago

had some inaccuracies.

Old sports injuries have returned to bite me in the knees so I consider myself more a walker than a hiker. We will be looking for something 3-4 miles

or less with no steep climbs, it's the descent that can be problematic.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Top Ten Sedona hikes is another good one. It details the most popular trails which are coincidentally mostly easy to moderate.

The maps are generally accurate and the suggested references above are helpful too.

A few suggestions:

Bell Rock/ Courthouse Loop is easy

Little Horse is more moderate

Red Rock State Park also has some nice walks

There are a lot of innacuracies in the Red Rock Ranger Districts map. It hasn't been updated in years. The innacuracies are in regards to difficulty level, milage, and new trails/redircted trails are not shown. Unfortunatly most of the trails are up-and-down sometimes steep sometimes mild. If you want a map of the trails in Sedona I would suggest one of the maps with GPS accuraccy showing the topograph such as this one. The trails below are well marked and traveled especially RR State Park.

>> Courthouse Loop (couterclockwise) This is the easiest trail to find as the trailhead is just off Hwy 179, Bell Rock Vista Trailhead.

>> Red Rock State Park has a lot of nice loops where you can opt out easily if you have any problems. There is a fee to get in the park however.

Do not go on Little Horse, Huckaby or Baldwin as there are many steep sections. (Huckaby and Little Horse are two of the trails that are not accurate on FS maps and descriptions. The section of Baldwin)
