Last minute Sedona trip-suggestions?

We are taking a spontaneous road trip to Sedona next week. It will be myself and my husband and our 4 year old son, who enjoys road trips. We live in L.A., but will be departing from Carlsbad (read: Legoland) on Monday night. We will have 8 days total starting on Tuesday.

I thought we'd stop in Indio for the night and then get an early start on Tuesday morning. Planning on staying in Sedona for 3-4 nights and taking a day trip or two. So far, the Grand Canyon is the only one we have planned.

I have read here on TA that some interesting stops on the way to or from Sedona would be: Salome, Wickenburg, Prescott.

Are there other places we shouldn't miss? What might be a good place to stay a couple nights? We like small towns, ghost towns, and nature activities suitable for our young son. We also like museums, art, and unusual-off the beaten path locations. We like to ramble and discover new places rather than plan everything to the last detail.

Also, still haven't decided on lodging in Sedona. There is availability at the Enchantment Resort, but it is a little pricey. I like the idea of the kid's camp though. Any recs on similar lodging that's closer to under $300. a night?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Cylander...<We like small towns, ghost towns,> you might want to check out Jerome as a day trip from Sedona. Jerome is about 30 miles across the valley from Sedona and is a revived early 1900s mining town turned artist haven. It has a collection of galleries, tourist shops and restaurants and one of the nice things is that there is a park with playground right in the middle of town, in case the little one needs a break. Outside of town is the Gold King Mine, which all of our visiting friends' kids love. It's a funky collection of old vehicles and mining shacks, with some wandering animals kids can feed. A good day trip from Sedona might start with a stop at Tuzigoot National Monument (part way between Sedona & Jerome). It is a smaller, very accessible Native American ruin and won't require a long attention span.

See the post about driving from LA to Sedona. It outlines the routes through Wickenburg and Prescott. Taking the back road to Prescott would make it longer though.

I would be more tempted to stop in Palm Springs than Indio. Is there something you'd like to see there? If you want to stay in a Country Western town, look at Wickenburg (around 51/2-6 hours from Carlsbad). We find it very interesting. It's not far from Phoenix, but it has a nice small town appeal.

Oh, I just read the leaving Monday night. I would consider Palm Springs. Also when we left LA at night to come here sometimes we stopped at Blythe.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Palm Springs would be a better stop-I was just thinking we'd save a little driving time stopping at Indio. But I'm reconsidering.

Would like to check out Jerome and Prescott. And Wickenburg.

I was happy to get a room at the Tovar Hotel/Grand Canyon so we're staying there for one night. It was booked yesterday, but today one opened up-lucky for me!

Thanks again for the help!!

Agua Caliente Casino at Ramon Rd and I-10 near Palm Springs would be a good place to stop. It's 5 minutes from Indio, but right on the highway. You can have a good breakfast and get an early start .

Palm Springs is a great place, but hardly the kind of destination that you can see or experience in an over night stay. But it is also loaded with hotel and restaurant choices.
