Sedona December 27 - 31, 2012 with Teenagers

Taking two adventurous teens (and somewhat less adventurous husband) to Sedona and looking for recommendations. Teens are ages 14 and 16.

What are best outdoor activities for this time of year -- seems like it will be rather cold, so rafting, kayaking, etc. is out. (In fact, what are clothing recommendations for this time of year?)

They love: jeep tours, climbing, rappelling, hiking, ropes and obstacles courses, ATVs, astronomy, ballooning, history and archaeology. No horseback riders or mountain bikers.........

Can either one drive an ATV or something similar?

is there a company with a smaller, more personalized Hot Air Balloon ride than the 16-person balloon basket we see advertised?

Finally, thoughts on the Grand Canyon Railway?

Thank you in advance. From a Carlsbad, CA mom.

Skip the GC Railway. Drive to the GCNP on your own. You'll save $1,000.00 and you'll have more and better time at the park. If you can get lodging there for an overnight stay, that would be the best.

No water activities around Sedona in the winter, but plenty of other outdoor adventures.

Apparently an adventure course has recently opened in Flagstaff.

I know nothing about it, just read about it in the news. It's located at the south end of Flagstaff, closest to Sedona.

Here's an astronomy activity that gets good reviews. I've never done it.

Be sure to see Red Rock Fantasy!

Drive to the Grand Canyon yourself rather than the GC train. But there is a train trip in the Verde Valley that your teens may enjoy: http://verdecanyonrr.com/

Sedona Adventures is still open to rent Ducky Kayaks and other river adventures.

Per an email from them:

"The Verde River and the fall colors are beautiful in November. December though February, winter, is the best time for boating our high desert river.

Mild day time tempetures tend to be in the 60's to low 70's

We have ended our guided river operations on Sunday November 5th but you can still glide down the mellow stretches of the Verde River with our rental with shuttle service.

The Verde River is beatifull in November (fall colors) December and January. Winter is the best time for boating our high desert river.

I bet they would love a Pink Jeep tour. Be sure to make your reservation ahead of time. 10 a.m. is a good time.

See the Chapel of the Holy Cross and Tlaquepaque. The Red Rock Fantasy will still be open. Walk through Christmas displays created mostly by families. Our guests usually love that.

They would probably enjoy hiking: could take Baldwin to Templeton to HT trail which goes to Cathedral Rock. This starts at the end of Verde Valley School Rd.

A half day trip to Jerome (old mining town) would be good. Lunch: Haunted Hamburger See the petroglyphs at Honanki or Palatki while you are here.

Spend half a day in Oak Creek Canyon. See Slide Rock State Park and visit the Indian Garden where the first settlers lived. (You can pick up lunch there.)

If you run out of unique Sedona-type things to do they may like Out of Africa especially during the predator feed.

Visit Blazin' M Ranch and have a chuck wagon dinnner.

For clothes GCNP will be cold. Be sure to bring gloves, long johns etc. in case. You can get an idea of the weather on Accuweather.com a few days before you leave.

After you choose where to go you can come back with a tentative itinerary and have some help with organization.

Have a wonderful memorable trip!
