Hotels between Phoenix & Sedona readily available?

We're flying in on Friday Dec. 7th & visiting family in the Phoenix area. Our timeshare week at the Sedona Pines starts on Sat. I don't know how late we'll be in Phoenix, but I'd like to get a start towards Sedona when we're done visiting late afternoon/early evening.

Are there a lot of hotels just off the highway between Phoenix & Sedona or will we have a tough time finding one if we just drive until we feel like stopping? I don't want to pass Montezuma's Castle/Well since I'd like to do that right away Sat morning on our way into Sedona.

Any small town or hotel in particular we should try for on the way? Don't need anything fancy, but would like clean! Will probably need to eat supper around there somewhere too...

Any suggestions appreciated!

No, there are not many hotels once you get past north Phoenix. That's where you should stop for the night. There is a Drury in that area that gets good reviews:

Actually there are several on the north side of PHX up as far as Anthem. Then there's nothing for the next hour, but that there are a few at Camp Verde, including the Cliff Castle Casino, and that is near Montezuma Castle. From there it's only a half hour to Sedona.

Thanks! I really wanted to get out of the Phoenix area before stopping, but it will depend on how late we get started & how tired we are. I'll look into what is available in Anthem as well as Camp Verde so we have some options on hand.

I honestly recommend simply getting an inexpensive hotel room just north of Phoenix, on I-17. It's such a scenic drive to Sedona, including the part that's just north of Phoenix; it would be a shame to miss it. There are hotels near Happy Valley Road and I-17, or you could choose one in Anthem, a few miles further north. From there, it's less than 1 1/2 hours to Sedona.

If you like, you could stop at Rock Springs Cafe for breakfast on the way to Sedona. It's just a few more miles north of Anthem:

If this is your first time making that drive, I stand by my previous post and suggest you stay in north Phoenix.

Thanks for the input...wasn't thinking that it might be dark when we're leaving Phoenix and then I'd miss the scenic views on the drive. Again, I guess it depends on what time we end up leaving. I appreciate your responses!

Definitely don't drive in the dark. You're traveling to a state that couldn't be more different than your home state of Wisconsin. Further, you'll travel through a variety of environments as you climb nearly 4,000 feet from Phoenix to Sedona. If you go in to the Grand Canyon, youll add another 2,500 feet. You don't want to miss seeing it.

For a point of reference, today the sunset is at 520pm in Phoenix.
