Real time trip report 11/23-11/29 2013

Maybe this is something different on this forum. I cannot be trusted to write a trip report after the fact and I like to record or trips so I do it in real time. It's fun for me to write when it's all fresh- so here we go.

Arrived today at 10:16 from Boston. Uneventful and on time just the way I like it. There are three of us- husband Pete, son Luke-15 and Moi. After we had booked the trip my elder son Quinn, 22, was able to juggle his work schedule so he could join us. Our flight was full but we were able to get him on a flight that arrived just 1 hour later than us. So we grabbed the rental car and here we are in the airport cell phone lot- fantastic idea by the way- waiting for Q to land which he will any minute. Sky Harbor surrounds are so beautifully kept- not a weed or scrap of litter in sight. Are you listening Beantown??? Cloudy and mild. The rain has just blown through and everything looks fresh the air is light.

Then it's off to Old Scottsdale for lunch at a place we really enjoyed when we were here for a conference a couple of years ago- Cowboy Ciaos then on to Sedona. I'll add some photos along the way and hopefully not bore you all to tears. Thanks so much for all the help in planning- much obliged.

Can't wait to get moving and see firstborn. Check ya later!

Drive safely this afternoon. Sedona is currently overcast, but it appears that the worst of the storm has passed. The forecast for the coming week is excellent.

Let us know if theres anything you need while you're here.

Thank you RR! We're here safe and sound. Really nice start to what we hope to be a wonderful week. Enchantment Resort is beautiful and I am so glad we opted to stay out of town for our first leg. It is so peaceful here and just what the doctor ordered. More on Enchantment later.

I'll start where we left off. #1 son arrived safely and on time and we were off to Old Scottsdale for Cowboy Ciao's famous Stetson Chop Salad. If you locals haven't tried it by all means do. It's as pretty as it is delicious. If this is too much detail just scroll on by. My mom loves all the gory deets and she will not be denied.

Stetson Chopped Salad ingredients are-all chopped up and as follows: Norwegian Smoked Salmon, plain cous cous (too tiny to chop), arugula, tomato, air dried sweet corn, asiago cheese, black currants and pepitas all tossed together with a buttermilk dressing. Aria on a plate- you heard it here.

Satiated we hit the road. Hopped right on 101 as suggested to 17 and the ride was a breeze. As predicted the overcast skies and sprinkles accompanied us all the way. I am sure a crystal clear day would have been breathtaking but the overcast sky with points of sunlight shining through here and there and about a half of a dozen rainbows was gorgeous and dramatic. I'm glad I was not driving because I could not take my eyes off the scenery as we climbed Rt 17.

As we approached R 179 we were startled by a distant view of a single sunlit rock formation visible beyond a gap in the cloud covered mountains in the foreground- a column of sunlight through the clouds illuminated this massive formation that glowed pink and blue grey in the distance, shades of the Rivendale of my imagination surrounded by the Misty Mountains. I'm not optimistic that I was able to capture even a hint of the coolness of that first glimpse of what we knew was to come. We'll see.

More later.

Here I am falling down on the job already. So much to see and do and so little time. I left off at the end of our arrival day. We ended the day at the Mii Amo Spa here at Enchantment. They have a little cafe and we thought we'd grab a bite there and then enjoy the outdoor hot tub. The cafe was...meh. A little pretentious for our liking but might be right up other spa goers alley. Anyway- we were tired and just wanted a quick bite of something. Wrong place for that.

The outdoor hot tub was great and really hot and the regular pool was heated to a temp that was super comfortable even though it was really cold out. So, when the heat of the hot tub was too much we jumped into the pool to cool off then back to the hot tub. Heaven. We're just overgrown children really and easy to amuse. We had the place to ourselves- probably because it was raining a little- those kooky New Englanders are a hearty bunch. The sane people were up at the bar with the fireplace.

We had a bottle of wine back at the room and were out like lights.

Sunday was to be our Broken Arrow Jeep day but the skies were dark grey and still cold and raining on and off. The forecast was optimistic but you could tell the front was stuck and not going anywhere for the bulk of the day. When I called to reschedule the nice person at Pink Jeep tried to tell me that the weather makes the whole experience more dramatic and besides they had ponchos for us so we would not get hypothermia induced pneumonia. I'm a good sport but there is good dramatic and get me the hell out of here dramatic. We rescheduled for Wednesday.

So what to do? We noodled around Upper Sedona and peeked into Silver Saddle to see if we wanted to dine there because it was on my list of RR's favorites and he has been my planning guru. Charming interior so it is a must do. Ducked in and out of a few shops and then Pete wanted to go over to the Tlaquepaque shopping area to check that out. I could just spend a fortune in this town I am just saying. But that is not why were are here so I herded the guys back to the car. The shops there are very cool- lots of beautiful stuff. But we don't need more stuff.

On a whim because our plans were postponed and I wanted to check out Jerome we did. When we arrived you could not see the town because it was in a cloud. I kid you not. I was curious about the Grande Hotel and so we decided to go there for lunch. Pretty Victorian room and we had a table right at the window which was great except that the giant cloud right outside was just bland. Lunch was very nice- super fresh ingredients- sorry no food porn (photos of food) because it was just a salad. Nice waiter and he told us a little about the hotel even though they are separate businesses.

I'm not gonna lie. The building has a creep factor of 8.5 I'd say. The doctor/surgeon who devoted his life there must have been an incredible human being. Talk about a life lived in service of others. Some good karma there I'm betting. That said over 10,000 people died in that building according to our waiter so it is not surprising that the place has a vibe. I don't need to stay there- lunch was plenty. But it was fun to see. We all thought Jerome a fun funky, free spirited place and we'd like to go back on a nice day. But I didn't tell you the coolest thing. As we were finishing our lunch, in a period of 5 to 7 minutes the cloud lifted and we could see forever. From a blank wall of grey to about a 30 mile plus vista. Incredible and so fun to see. Maybe that happens often in Jerome but it was a real treat.

As we headed back down the hill from Jerome all of a sudden a beam of sun broke through the clouds in the distance and just like yesterday illuminated one of the Sedona rock formations in the distance. Crazy!

Back to our beautiful Enchantment we just chilled. Just after dark we tried the hot tub by the main resort pool instead of the spa hot tub. I like it better- you can see more sky but it was still cloud covered. After a few minutes a couple of stars peeked out of the clouds then as if on cue the clouds disappeared and the stars broke out. This is no New England sky. Holy cow! We were all alone again. I thought everyone would want to be there but once again we were the only ones. Heaven on earth.

I always though I could never leave the ocean but I could now. I'll add a link to some preliminary photos.

The clouds were the rarity. As you can see today we gave returned to normal, clear blue mind blowingly beautiful skies. You're in for a treat this week. There's tons of snow up on the rim though. Dress warmly and expect to see snow on the ground if you go to the Grand Canyon National Park.

I meant "cold weather gear! RR, how blessed you are to live in this place!

Today was fun. We woke up to a spectacular sky. Our east coat internal time clock has us up early and over to Mii Amo Spa first thing. We all do our own thing and then meet for breakfast. My heart is bursting in gratitude.

******We walked the trail to the spire. That was worth doing. - photos to follow****

We then:

Decided to hang out at the resort which is just so beautiful. We ordered a pizza from Famous Delish. First thing tomorrow we are headed to GCNP.

Will elaborate later.
