Spent our first four nights in Phoenix (lots of hiking – Camelback Mountain, McDowell Sonoran Preserve and South Mountain Park) and then travelled to Sedona. We stayed at the Best Western Plus on 89A for three nights (March 9-12) and had no concerns at all. It was a good base to explore Sedona from. We arrived early Sunday afternoon, checked in and then headed out for a hike at the Bell Rock/Courthouse Butte Loop Trail – 4.5 miles including going up Bell Rock for some beautiful views. Next morning we got a 7:30 am early start to hike to Devils’ Bridge. We parked at the Chuckwagon Trailhead and were lucky to arrive to have the Bridge to ourselves for the whole time we were there for photos - great hike and views. Next we did the Chimney Rock trail loop and after that the short Boynton Canyon Vista Trail and then to end the day up Doe Mountain/Mesa – we loved this end of day hike along the trail that switchbacked all the way up to the mesa and coming down we experienced a glorious sunset. The photos we took from all the hiking trails were amazing. We had the best meals within walking distance of our hotel at the Olde Sedona Bar and Grille – great food and unpretentious atmosphere. Hated Uptown Sedona – tourist trap (sorry, not for us, we are not tshirt/trinket shoppers) and the backed up traffic (the only unpleasant part of our trip). The next day we were on the road by 7:30 am for our day trip to Page – took about 2.5 hrs – easy, beautiful scenic drive. Did the 11:00 am tour of Lower Antelope Canyon –this was a ‘wow’ experience for us and have some amazing photos to remember the experience. After that we went to Horseshoe Bend, a definite must see if you are in the area, more great photo opportunities. Stopped for a late lunch before heading back to Sedona arriving by 4:30 pm – a very easy and enjoyable day trip. Our last morning, we did the Cathedral Rock hike – again more amazing scenery and great hike. Left by Noon to catch our scheduled flight from PHX to BUF only to find out by the time we arrived in Phoenix that our flight had been cancelled due to a snowstorm in Buffalo and the earliest flight we could get was 5 days later! Much panic and stress followed but once we were able to book some last minute accommodations we enjoyed some unexpected extra days in Arizona – including two nights in Tucson that wasn’t part of our original plan.
