PHX to Sedona Drive – What are must-do stops/attractions?

We are traveling to Sedona in later October, but are flying into PHX airport. Our flight arrives around 9AM and we do not check into our hotel in Sedona until 4PM (or after). Can people recommend wonderful attractions along our drive from PHX to Sedona? We have a lot of time to explore! Or do you have other options you would do with this time on your first day of travel? Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing with the drive from Scottsdale. Thanks!

Both Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well are off of I-17 and are both worth a visit. A lot of the folks on this board really like stopping at Rock Springs Café for breakfast/lunch/pie. If you are looking for a place to eat it is about 1/2 way between PHX and Sedona. Finally, just the the ride up 179 towards Sedona after you get off of I-17, aka the Red Rock Scenic Byway, is spectacular and worth a few stops.

There is Fort Verde State Historical Park in Camp Verde.

With that much time I'd take the route along Lake Pleasant to Wickenburg, Prescott, Jerome and to Sedona.

All decent suggestions for diversions on the way to Sedona, but none really qualify as must dos. You don't need to wait or waste time on your way to Sedona just because of the time for checking in at your accommodations. There is nothing on the way that will be more stunning or exciting than what you'll find at Sedona itself.

How many nights will you be staying at Sedona? If it's less than 4, I advise getting straight to Sedona and begin the explorations

We are staying 4 nights in Sedona. What would your first day suggestions be? Also, we are looking to do some mountain biking for a day while in Sedona. Can you recommend the best place to rent bikes and ride?

You will have plenty of time in Sedona. It would be a shame to rocket up the freeway and miss all the wonderful things Tet14 suggested in post #4. BTW, he forgot to mention that you will drive through an amazing "forest" of very diverse cactus, and see them closer than you will on the freeway and you won't see them at all in Sedona. Wickenburg is the most authentic old west town in AZ. You can see the gold mine, ghost town, cowboy museum, shop for true western wear you won't find in Sedona, and then cap it all off with some hand made ice cream!

Another real old west town is Prescott, home of the original "Whiskey Row. This is an entire block of swinging door saloons from the 1880's. You could have lunch in one of them while you look for the bullet holes in the ceiling.

You might like these towns so much you will want to come baack and stay in them.

Happy Trails!!!

A good place for bike rentals is the Sedona Bike and Bean located in the Bell Rock Plaza:

They can set you up with everything you need. There are some really nice mountain biking trails to explore. One very good place to ride is the area near where you'll find Jordan Trail. This is a really scenic area that doesn't get lots of traffic typically and there are some really good and well maintained trails to ride.

The interstate route to Sedona is actually every scenic, but since you'll have 3 full days for Sedona, I'd suggest taking the long route via Wickenburg, Prescott, Jerome and Cottonwood to get there. It's an all day drive with short stops at each of the historic towns.

The other option is to skip Jerome and Cottonwood, leaving more time to enjoy the scenic ride and Wickenburg and Prescott. Then you can take the often recommended 1/2 day trip to the first two towns.
