Where are the best watering holes and good eats in Tempe?

Three guys in their 40's arriving on St. Paddy's Day. Golf and spring training are on the agenda. Staying at the Tempe Courtyard Marriott. Where's the best place to go to enjoy a few adult beverages and some good grub? Any good Sports bars or restaurants in the area. I hear Mill Ave. has quite a few places and believe we are within walking distance(which is good!). Any help would be appreciated.

Mill Ave is very college-oriented. There are a couple of places, like Uno, that aren't, but it's probably not what they/you are looking for.

Maybe look into Four Peaks Brewing. It's near Downtown Tempe, although on the other side of ASU, but it's local, brews its own (good) beer and has very good food. It's a popular place though.

Tempe Marketplace (shopping center) has some good restaurants and I believe I saw a sports bar.

Monti's is an adult's atmosphere with a bar and good steaks

You have a good location at the Courtyard.

Within walking distance are Gordon Birsch, The Library, Hooters, Rula Blua (Big Irish St. Paddy's Day party!), and Casey Moore's (previously mentioned). Four Peaks is great, but not within walking distance, nor is Tempe MarketPlace. If you have a car - either would be a good bet (love Four Peaks for atmosphere and the food is good.)

You can check out the Mill Avenue website for more info. It's a great area - you'll enjoy!

Just as a friendly "heads up",

(since you did mention "restaurants within walking distance") - Arizona has VERY strict new DUI laws, and on St. Patrick's Day the police are out in full force looking to pull over anyone and everyone who might have been drinking. We live near an "Irish" bar, and on St. Paddy's dozens of cars get pulled over. That night especially, head to a bar close to your hotel, and take a cab or walk. ;) Have a great trip!

Thanks to all for the great info. I definitely don't want to get bagged for DUI. We will be doing a lot of walking, and maybe cabbing. We do have a car which we plan to use mostly for golf and spring training games. We picked the Courtyard Marriott because it was supposedly close to a lot of bars and restaurants. Especially looking forward to St. Paddy's day. Rula Bula is the place to go? I will really be looking forward to a few frosty's and some good old corn beef and cabbage after a long flight. Is the food decent there? What type of crowd should we expect? I should be arriving at the hotel by 8:00 P.M. How far a walk is it from the hotel? Thanks again.

It's a 5 minute walk. Just ask the front desk. The other huge party in Tempe is a Maloney's. It's a little over a mile east of your hotel. Could take the light rail then walk a bit.

Yes, the food is good at Rula Bula. They have a great patio with live music out back. As for the crowd - it'll be a big variety. Everyone likes to celebrate St. Patty's Day! What a great way to start off your visit!
